Matthews currently has about 20 more goals in less games than Ovechkin had at the same point of his career.

Ovechkin spending almost twice as much on the powerplay in their first 7/8 seasons also entirely erases the difference in scoring levels, infact it was shown that considering this Ovechkin actually played in the slightly higher scoring environment (as a one way offensive winger instead of a two center).
And Ov finally delivered at play off time.
Matthews may do that day one of the years too.
OV never got past the second round till his 13th season.
Austin 7 seasons and still counting

3 guys at 50 goals already... it's impressive. And I didn't have Hyman and Reinhart as the next 2 to hit 50 this season.
60 is the new 50

Games played

AM: 481
AO: 553

Ovechkin played 72 more games in that span and is only up 40 more goals
Is that the definition of "raw totals"... Cool, every day I learn something new.

Also, the fact that AM missed much more games than AO does not make him better, he will never get the missed games back. And going forward, the fact that AM was injured soo much when young suggests that he simply cannot match AO when it comes to durability, can he?
"He played fewer games" is not a big advantage...

It actually erases nothing since scoring levels were lower regardless of increased PP opportunities.
ES scoring level diffences is probably even bigger overall 12% difference in scoring.

No, it doesn’t erase anything.

Matthews has a long, long way to go to be in the same sentence as Ovechkin when it comes to goal scoring dominance.

Goal scoring is higher in first 7 years for Matthews vs OV’s first 7 years.

Matthews should have better prepared for Covid shutting down the NHL, Ovechkin would have simply played all 82 games

3 Rockets in 4 seasons. I will just leave that.
Oh man, I didn't realize before that AM only won 2 Rockets in his first 7 seasons in the league... By what I read here one would think he already won 4 or 5 ....

Yea, AM only lost games because of Covid.... How many games did he lose to Covid and how many to injury/suspensions ? ;)

how many goals does McDavid have again this season. Oh wait…
McDavid is playing injured. Happened at the beginning of the season.

If he was healthy, we would absolutely have more goals than Matthews, and that is an undisputable fact. It is not just my weird opinion that contradicts what an undisputable fact really is.

You have a weird definition of a fact.

Can you predict the lotto numbers as a fact as well?

Dude, you must have missed the earlier post. It was a sarcastic response to the claim that Matthews would have 100% outscored McDavid last year if he wasn't hurt.

In the first 7 seasons in NHL:

AM: 299 total goals, best season 60 goals.
AO: 339 total goals, best season 65 goals.

Yet somehow, "wouda/coulda/on pace" means AM somehow outdone AO...

What is your reasoning for posting misleading information? You know there is a season’s worth of extra games played by Ovechkin in that comparison, right?

There’s a shortened covid season included in your ‘injuries’. A season where Matthews scored 42 goals in 56 games

OV didn’t play because of Covid as well, so its a wash.
OV missed a whole year before his career started, because of lockout, then another 1/2 season for a lockout.

Irrelevent

Matthew’s would have scored all of these goals if he was in the league when ovi came in.

There is nothing to suggest he would score less than ovi in the 2000’s

It’s not a wash, because Covid year was included for Matthews “first 7 seasons” but not for Ovechkin’s “first 7 seasons”

The poster could have probably used the lockout year to even out the games, but skipped it to give ovi the games played edge (I use edge loosely, it’s a full season of games)

NHL takes away 2-3 Ovi goals every season, this year 3-4 already.
Honestly, I think the argument that Matthews is losing out on goals due to challenges that OV didn't is pretty dumb....it may have some factual evidence to it....but it would only be a handful of goals....doesn't matter.

That said....can you back up your claim that the NHL takes away 2-3 OV goals every season and 3-4 already this year?

I think their pace has been pretty close so far when considering scoring environment.

Matthews currently has 550 games and 357 goals. At the same age, OV had 547 games and 338 goals. Scoring was only a bit lower during that time period for OV (less than 5%)....if you do the math and apply the % difference, you get to around 355 goals for OV....so pretty even.

If you had of done the same comparison at the time with OV vs. Gretzky, OV would have been lightyears behind, so it doesn't matter that much. We should really postpone this discussion for at least 7-8 years....but even then it might be too early to talk about it too much. Way too many variables still at play.

Ok, so if we remove AO 7th season, he still has 301 goals to AM 299, which still means that AM didn't "outdone OV raw" as the post I was answering to claims. Also, I see you are willing to remove an entire season for AO due to lockout but complain about AM missing a few games due to CoVid.

Last but not least, and this is the point I was making: how many games did AM lose because of injuries? They greatly outnumber the games missed due to COVID.

If my math is right, in the first 7 seasons in the league, he missed 55 games due to injury/suspension or 7.85 games per season. This is in the early part of his career. He will never get those games back, and going forward, they suggest that he will probably not be as durable as AO.....

90% of the game is half mental. That would correctly adjust scoring for any potential injuries and either player playing only ~75% of their actual power, given the duration of the injuries and lingering effects.
