Is that why McDavid gives up fewer shots, chances and high danger chances than Matthews?

Takeaways/60 isn’t the only stat to find out defensive play

I can't speak to McDavid's defensive play but having watched Matthews since his rookie year, his best skill without the puck is takeaways which he's elite at and has been since his first game (ask Erik Karlsson).

Otherwise - on the positive side, I'd say he's good at using his body to separate opponents from the puck in all zones but not much else. His line gets boxed in the Leafs zone too frequently and I still question his placement on the PK as I don't see him standing out there as much as other "offensive" forwards like Marner.

So overall, a few things he does defensively are good to great, but overall I don't see a Selke win or (deserved) nomination in his immediate future unless voters decide to start subscribing to the "best defense is a good offense" theory, in which case 60+ goals would go a long way.

Players who have the puck on their stick more tend to give the puck away more.

Where did you get this selke stat?

I’m looking for it and all I found is what was talked about last years reault

Interesting that stuff like blocked shots and takeaways are in there.

I don’t know what things like SA/60 and XGA/60 mean but it looks like those are important re: the selke.

I also noticed that McD has never been considered for the selke so I guess by the pic you posted he’s gone from never to the front runner. For some reason I call bullshit but who knows.

I guess he’s the best defensive forward in the league. Thank god Bergeron retired hahaha

Anyway…hopefully matthews scores his 50th tonight in his hometown and continues to close the gap in the hart race

I don’t think he’s the front runner, but him and Matthews are comparable this year defensively.

Almost any of the analytic twitter guys have a card from their perspective showing McDavids been very good this year defensively

Matthews has also never been considered for the selke

Matthews has better numbers than Marner on the PK. Not saying he is necessarily better but his results have been amazing so far.

Matthews has the best PP goals against on the team, but Marner plays more than twice as much on the PK. Still though, that’s quite the gap between them, 2.69 PPGA/60 to 9.74. This is also his first season killing penalties regularly.

He’s so good at reading the play, stripping pucks and controlling the puck, only makes sense that he would be good on the PK

The problem with giving Matthews more penalty killing time on ice is that you very quickly overload the guy.

Sure, the Leafs tend not to get many power plays, but in a game they do, his numbers would climb to well over 24 minutes per game, and that's just too much.

I think Matthews has looked like the most solid defender on the pk.
Marner is the smartest pk player and tends to get the worst match-ups.

Nylander is the quick-strike player who is always looking for a goal.

But Matthews looks to be the guy less frequently in danger of allowing a goal against. His penchant for the stick lift+steal combined with no objection to be in the line of opposing shots makes him a great penalty killer.

As for the argument about why he was never better than 10th in Selke.................

He never was asked to kill penalties, and for some reason, the Selke trophy cannot be given to players who don't kill penalties.

Just like the Norris can't be given to defenders who don't score a lot of points.
