The Leafs are top heavy. You can’t win with just a couple of players eating all your cap. Matthews and the other top players on the Leafs comes at a price.

68 points between Bertuzzi Domi and Reaves clocks in at a cool 10mil, there’s plenty of fat to trim before complaining about the guys actually earning their salaries.

We might all be watching something special this season. Make sure to pay attention, if you dont you might regret it. It has been a long time since I seen a player on a tear like this.

We might be talking about this in 20 years. So watch while you can.

To put this season in perspective of how outrageous it is:

Matthews with 49 goals has more goals than the following:

Oilers Duo - Connor Mcdavid (21) + Leon Draisaitl (27) = 48
Penguins Duo - Sidney Crosby (31) + Evgeni Malkin (16) = 47
Ottawa Trio - Tim Stutzle (13) + Josh Norris (13) + Claude Giroux (18) = 45
Vegas Quadruple - Jack Eichel + Mark Stone + Chandler Stephenson + Alex Pietrangelo = 47
5 of 6 Fs of SJ Top 6 - Tomas Hertl (15) + Michael Granlund (6) + Anthony Duclair (11) + Mike Hoffman (8) + William Eklund (8) = 48

Yeah, but has less than the Florida trio of Reinhart, Tkachuk, and Bobrovsky.

Auston is on a different level. Unless he gets injured very soon, he has the Rocket in the bag, and the Hart seems pretty much a lock as well. There can be no doubt that he indeed a generational player.

The Toronto center has an unlikely fan rooting for him, too. In a Russian-language interview with Sport-Express’ Igor Rabiner, Ovechkin revealed that he is hoping Matthews can eclipse his mark.

“God grant that he beat me,” Ovechkin said as translated via Yandex Translate. “If you look at the current hockey, it has a lot more goals, it is more open. So this can be expected.”

Most impressive thing about McDavid this year is how he has turned into a full 200ft player
He’s definitely made it important in his game. I think that’s great for the oilers. He’s not great at it yet, but he will be if he keeps going.

No question Matthews is exceptional ... now it's time to take over in the PO's and earn that Conn Smythe! Can he do it? Will the team rally around his banner year when it counts? Hope so!

When the hell did that happen? I must have been sleeping through those games while in the stands
Looks much better defensively than Matthews, that's for sure. when McDavid is not scoring goals, he is assisting on them. When Matthews isn't scoring (he does them in bunches) he is not doing much else TBH

I could see McDavid having more assists than Matthews gets points (something that has already happened)

I will look at Matthews much more highly when he stops Regressing come playoff time.

32 goal pace is pretty pathetic for a guy who can rack em up during regular season. When big boy hockey gets started, he shrinks thus far.

Matthew's easily could have gotten his third straight hat trick last night. He is unstoppable right now.

LOL please. McDavid isn’t even in the same realm defensively as Matthews. It’s legitimately not an argument.

He’s also the most consistent goal scorer of our time, not “scores in bunches”.

Dont let your leaf hatred cloud your vision. If you think McDavid is better than Matthews defensively, you should schedule an appointment with your nearest optometrist ASAP.

This is false. Think of how we had 15 million in cap space and spent it on basically 10 goals, a useless goon and a useless defenseman. If Bertuzzi could actually score again and Klingberg wasn’t a black hole defensively and scored like he used to suddenly the Leafs have some of the best scoring depth in the NHL, and that’s not even considering how much more players like Robertson, McMann and Knies could progress as soon as this postseason.
