Auston Matthews 69 goals in 81 games, most goals scored since Lemieux in 1995-96

My guess is a combination of misremembering along with some bias and denial.

Through two playoff series, Kucherov failed to register a single, solitary point with Matthews on the ice. I suppose he COULD frustrate him more by having him register NEGATIVE points?

Ok? Why would it frustrate him? They won one of those series and the other was only lost due to goaltending. Not like Matthews was anything special. And where did that go in the next series (if there was one) for Matthews he just forgot how to play defense or something? Kopitar was a playoff beast in a way Matthews hasn't even come close to yet.

Like cool you score 70 goals and haven't made it past the 2nd round:laugh:

Not sure why people are laughing at this, he aged much better than Gretzky as a goal scorer and in a harder to score era.
I laughed because of the word obliterated not that Lemieux couldn’t have the record. If Gretzky gets a normal 92-99 with natural gradual decline without goal scoring completely vanishing he is over 1000. Could healthy Lemieux have the goals record with a perfectly healthy Gretzky? Sure I think there is a decent shot. I just laughed at obliterated because that’s just not realistic unless Mario gets full health and Gretzky’s doesn’t get altered at all.

Gee, I don’t know.....you do realize both players are compared because of what they do on the defensive side while being top end contributors? You just said their only comparison is size, despite the fact Kucherov had zero points with Matthews on the ice. Kucherov lterally could not possibly do any worse than he did. Given you clearly had zero clue how Matthews did defensively versus Tampa, why would I expect you to have any clue about how he did elsewhere?

No one buys what you are selling. Best just take the loss.

Also got 9 points in 5 games that series.

I’ve read through it multiple times, I can’t get enough of it

It’s 45 pages of Leaf fans clowning on hfboards users and them plugging their ears and going “nuuuuuh uhhhhhhh” like little children
plugging our ears to what type of comments though?. not readng through 120 pages. lol

He did get his 59th and 60th against them last time lol but honestly 2 goals in 3 games isn't guaranteed, even for him. Almost feel like he has to get it on Saturday.
there's a chance he doesnt score 70. he could easily miss 2 goals in 3 games. but I wouldn't bet against him doing it

oh here we go lmao. im losing my argument so lets change the topic to the playoffs

I would think if I was the star of a team and Im failing to score in the playoffs that Id be getting frustrated too, and likely the same if Kopitar was beating me all series long.

so guess Matthews is incapable to making players frustrated because the leafs have a poor playoff record?

Don't worry.

When Phil was a Leaf, he was the most overrated player in the league. The moment he left and made the Star Wars spoof vid for Pitt, he was instantly the lovable Ironman who everyone enjoyed having around.
He went from the cancer in the room wh9 poisoned all his teams and would never amount to anything, to back to back champion and had a large contingency outraged he was overlooked for the Conn Smythe.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with all the bullshit about Phil from Toronto. Nothing at all! It was definitely everyone else.

You guys are weirdly obsessive about negative things. Look at any mention of Dubas. Followed by a bunch of Leafs fans trying to dunk on anyone who isn't critical. It was the same with Phil.

Yeah, I'm gonna need Matthews to stay at 69 goals. If that number had a look, he'd be it..

Man this thread is an absolute salt factor. Just keeps on giving. Embarassing drunk uncle on twitter tier takes in here lmao

McDavid is on a different level than Matthews in the playoffs:

Matthews: 22 goals and 44 points in 50 playoff games.

McDavid: 29 goals and 75 points in 49 playoff games.

Claiming that they are comparable is simply absurd.

You certainly implied it in the post I quoted...
McDavid has played against how many Vezina winners? Tampa was the best team of the last 5 years, the Leafs haven’t exactly had it as easy as McNugget & Co

What Matthews is doing is causing me to totally reevaluate what it means to be the greatest scorer of all time (Ovie). I'm just considering so many other things related to single season totals and number of times doing it once I realized Alex only scored 60 once. I remember watching players like Bossy, Gretzky, Lemieux and Hull. I never remember Phil Esposito, was a little too young. But you start looking at how high they went, and then number of 70+ seasons and in particular 60+ seasons, and then number of 50+ seasons. 18 at 30+ is incredible for Ovie, but does it overthrow things that these others did due to longevity mostly and dead puck era arguments (and that IMO he does have the GOAT goal, along with several other contenders). I think Matthews is doing something to put his name already with the top 5 to 10 names when it comes to scoring and has the potential to be at or near the top. But I'm this whole run is causing me to reconsider Ovie's claim to being the GOAT too (and fairly so).

I don’t want to jinx it, but going on a mini-tear to get to within 2 goals of a huge milestone with 3 games remaining for the team is definitely exciting!
