Strange to me how Montreal has such a tough time with attendance in sports...at least compared with other similar sized cities in Canada/North America.

Impact, Alouettes, Expos.... all struggle(d) big time.

Cirque du Soleil eating up everyone's spending money over there? :dunno:

When Montreal has a winner we come out. Lose for a while and we stop going. You don't go to restaurants that serve bad food, go to a theater to see crappy movies, buy clothes that fall apart, or buy electronics that have poor reviews. We treat our sports teams the same way. If they are garbage or even mediocre we avoid them. The Habs get a pass most of the time, though they are the exception.

asking why attendance is an issue? spent 150$ bucks ticket, 30$ parking and 10$ waterdowned beer to see Canada play in a junior B game

we are a hockey town unlike toronto

Lets not turn this into a Toronto vs Montreal thing because it's not.

Both cities are great hockey and NHL cities.

This is a COST issue plain and simple.

It looks like greed from Hockey Canada but I'll wait to see if we ever find out how much the owners of the Leafs and Canadiens made for letting the tournament be in their buildings.

People in Montreal only care about the Habs. The tournament needs to go back to cities that don't have NHL teams, like Halifax and Buffalo.

And again, these numbers are total bullcrap. You can see the game for 32 dollars:
http://www.stubhub.com/iihf-world-junior-hockey-championship-tickets/9063699/

How computer illiterate are you Canadians if you don't know how to purchase tickets on StubHub. For christ's sake, I'm from Finland and even I know how to do it.

Seems to me that what you Canadians really need is not cheaper World Juniors tickets, but someone who can teach you how to use a computer.

Canadians aren't computer illiterate. No Canada game was available for $32 two weeks ago. Who do you think is releasing these tickets now on StubHub at discounted prices? This tournament priced itself out of the market and now they're trying to find a way to fill rinks without having to refund money on tickets pre-sold. The problem is most Canadians (self included) who saw the prices a few weeks ago said "no thanks" and haven't gone back to the idea of seeing a game live. I have no interest in paying $20 a seat now, the organizers are pirates of the highest order and deserve half empty rinks to understand the scope of their own stupidity. Team Canada will sell out games in the playoffs, but the "feel good" legacy this tournament could have had is already lying face down in a ditch.

this formula sucks... Why people should be motivate to go to the games when they know they will not have the medals games. I also think that without Scherbak and McCarron, the interest go lower. And everybody told it, its realy expensive

The ticket prices make no real sense. Why would I pay NHL prices for junior hockey? I looked into going to some games, but it isn't worth it to me.

The reality is that the segment of the population that follows for the most part junior aged players before they are stars and who for the most part play in small town ohl whl teams, this segment is low to middle class ( no disrespect) with lower disposable income vs NHL segment
You cant have NHL prices marketed to this segment

Montreal is the first city not to sell out a team Canada game since..............god knows when.

Shameful Montreal. No excuses.

While I am bias in favour of Toronto, having spent 4 years in Montreal, I think I have a fairly solid view of Montreal vs Toronto when it comes to sports.

I have been to Leaf games at the ACC, a Habs game at Centre Bell + 1 split squad game + one playoff away game shown on big screen. I have also been to watch the Missisauga Majors (then called), the Toronto Marlies and the Montreal Juniors (then called).

My findings:
1. In general the Bell Centre for Habs games is louder than the ACC for Leaf games. The one regular season Habs game I saw was against the Panthers, Louis Leblanc scored the winner and when he did, the arena got louder than any Leaf game I had ever been to up to that point. The only time since when I saw the ACC louder for a Leafs game was during the playoffs the next year. I think most people agree with this.

2. Toronto Teams are too "corporate focused". Pro teams know that firms and businesses will buy large amount of tickets so naturally the atmosphere can sometimes suffer. That being said, it also means people SHOW UP

3. Toronto is truly a hockey town. We get called "leafs town" but when you look at the fact the Marlies have gotten strong showings the past few years. While the number of teams in the GTA has shrunk, there are still the Majors (Steelheads) and the Generals. There is also an ECHL team in Brampton. Of course the GTHL is the largest hockey league in the world. THe OHL Cup for 15-16 year old minor midgets still gets way more attention than any league with 15 year old kids.

4. I dont like to crap on Montreal, but it seems to me to be more of a Habs town. The Juniors are obviously gone and as people have stated, if the team goes on a slide, there will be a noticeable shrinking in the attendence. A lot of people dont even know hockey, but because Price and Subban are plastered on bus stops and walls all over the city, they are still heroes in the way Phaneuf, Reimer and Kessel never will be

Montreal does MUCH better than buffalo or Halifax would with those prices.

The only reason Toronto do well is because companies were forced to buy tickets for the whole tournament to get the medal rounds tickets.

These prices are ridiculous. Definitely wasn't that expensive for Vancouver 2006, and that in part was why it set the attendance record, later beaten by Ottawa.

Anyone remember the Edmonton/Calgary prices?

Sounds to me like you don't even really want to see the games then. If I really wanted to see a hockey game and I could get tickets for a reasonable price, I would go. I wouldn't be looking for excuses for not going. Sadly I'd have to travel about 16 hours to get to Montréal.

BTW. Did you even check the prices on StubHub a few weeks ago?

People saying Halifax/Saskatchewan/Buffalo had better attendance need to realize that those arenas are waaaay smaller than the Bell Centre (save Buffalo which was basically filled with Canadians anyways).

I think the attendance is more than what you should expect for a U20 international tournament. Just because there are empty seats in a 20K capacity arena doesn't mean the attendance is low.

I bet the numbers blow Malmo out of the water.

Of course.
