Yeah you cant really know how good the sound in the arena is only from television. Its easy for broadcasters to decide how much fan sound they want and some prefer that there in ant to much stadium noice so we can hear the commentators.

I’m sure those high moments in the past (that featured loud fans) are what dominates that memory that makes up your perception of higher volume in the past. I will say that there is some legitimacy to the fact that new, larger barns just won’t create the noise of some older and smaller buildings.

Rexall Place in Edmonton had a pretty small area over the ice and the sound bounced off the walls and was absolutely deafening.

Rogers Place is probably 3 times the volume, and it can still be loud but peak noise is noticeably lower than the old rink. It's also harder to get chants going as the distance causes the fan started chants to end up a little out of sync.

As you mentioned it was very close quarters, with a low metal roof that made sound bounce around everywhere. Apparently it was bad for concerts, but it was amazing for playoff crowd ambiance.

When I was young, attending any decent rock concert meant volume so loud my ears would be still be ringing the next day and you'd have to yell at your stoner friends to be heard.

Nowadays, if I watch a live music broadcast there's no ringing at all and, in fact, can hear and be heard by anyone in the room without yelling.

Therefore, it's clear; music and crowds are far quieter than in the good ole days.

The mystery is why, when I've found produced video of concerts on YouTube I actually attended back in the day, do my ears not ring in real life like before nor do I need to yell while watching. It's like, so quiet and different, sort of detached, and no baked feeling whatsoever....you know what I mean?

Now that I think of it, the difference between being being at a hockey game vs watching a broadcast is sorta like that. Everything seems leveled-down from 11. I wonder why that is?

The TNT commentator crew is mid but Sportsnet crew is something as well IMO. I wish people would call them out for being complete homers even if they are a Canadian network. I don't think I ever saw Peak Bob Cole or the HNIC crew 20/30 years ago utterly gagging and favouring one team the way Jack Michaels and Louis Debrusk does lmao

The 2004 and 2006 Flames and Oilers runs (I will give props to both cities) was *bonkers*. Don't think you'll ever see that again, especially not stuff like women flashing crowds admist a sea of people outside post game, lol. The atmosphere was out of control.

Also it's crazy to see Corey Perry playing in that Oilers-Ducks series, haha. Almost 20 years later he's in the playoffs still with the Oilers.

There was a first round Oilers playoff home game one year I recall very distinctly. It may have even been in 2006 like you're referring to. Legitimately one of the best playoff atmospheres I've ever seen, and I'm not being hyperbolic in saying that. The broadcast had a noise meter thing (I'm sure there's an actual word for it but I don't know what it is) and was showing it on the screen. The crowd was loud. I believe the Oilers won the game too. Put them up 2-1 in the series. Actually now that I think about it I don't think it was 2006, because I think I recall them losing that series, and the 2006 Oilers made it to the finals, so it can't have been that year.
