Well, my list of D was ravaged..but I suppose that's bound to happen when I wait for the 4th round to draft one. Again, doing things a bit differently this year since I went goalie round 1. Still, I'm very happy to get this player here. A guy I think you could make the case for going a bit earlier, and one I think is still absolutely a 1D in a 20-team draft even if he isn't in the upper end of that. He's underrated in my book. I think he fits what I'm hoping to build quite well. He's one tough motherf***er, and his two-way abilities are exactly what I was looking for.

One of the premiere offensive defensemen of the O6 era, and a guy who could be just as effective away from the puck..Baltimore selects Bill Gadsby, D

I like Gadsby. He's the first defenseman I ever drafted. He's a guy that can take on different roles as he's requested to. I feel like most of the time you're going to want him focusing on his offensive capabilities, but it's my understanding that in Detroit, he was quite a fine shutdown man. I believe you can shift him as the situation in the game is and he remains relevant.

Here's a run-down of Gadsby's prime, with his placings in available voting, among the top 4 Ds with votes-

1952-53 Post-season All-Star [Norris equivalent?]
1. Kelly
2. Harvey
3. Undrafted A
4. Gadsby

1953-54 Post-season All-Star (see above)
1. Kelly
2. Harvey
3. Gadsby
4. Horton

1954-55- split between two teams... Gadsby didn't place.

1955-56: Inaugural Norris
1. Harvey
2. Gadsby
3. Kelly
4. Undrafted B

1956-57 Norris
1. Harvey
2. Kelly
3. Undrafted C
4. Gadsby

1957-58 Norris
1. Harvey
2. Gadsby
3. Undrafted C
4. Undrafted D

1958-59
1. Undrafted E
2. Gadsby
3. Undrafted F
4. Harvey

How many top-rung placings Gadsby would have collected were it not for the Harvey-Kelly giants walking the earth at that time is (as speculations go) right up there with how many Norrises Brad Park would have gotten, absent Orr.

I wanted to weigh in on nabby's F group.

Personally, I wouldn't roll Ovechkin-McDavid-Kucherov at ES, for a few reasons, the most obvious, being tactical.

That line lacks a true digger or puck retrieval type.

Sure, Ovechkin can throw his weight around and forecheck, but that's a waste of his best attribute (being in position to score). If you look at guys he's had across from him in Washington (Wilson, Oshie, neither will be drafted here), they represent the cornermen of the line. McD and Kuch offer little to nothing in that regard, putting the weight of checking on Ovechkin, which I don't like.

Defensively the line is going to be suspect at ES against the top tier ATD units. They're defensive ability is essentially the ability to keep the puck and generate offense.

I also don't like combining McD and Kuch's styles. I think both would be wonderful with Ovechkin, given their playmaking/vision supremacy, but they play differently in transition/cycle.

Ovechkin-McDavid-gritty defensive conscious RW
Kucherov generaling the 2nd line is how I'd roll but;

To be clear, I think it's a wonderful start at F, and am very interested to see how Nabby continues to build around those pillars.

There was some discussion on what constitutes a clutch player, that I also found entertaining.

I don't think being a great playoff performer automatically generates clutch as a conjoining adjective. To me, clutch is more about singular moments, big spots, etc. Obviously the deeper into the postseason tournament (NHL or international) the bigger the spot can be.

Do I think Kucherov is a great playoff performer in an all time light? Absolutely. The numbers he's put up already and multiple titles lends itself to that conclusion. The guy dropped 66 points over back to back playoffs, leading the tourney both times in assists/scoring, while winning the Cup. He had a pair of OT winning goals in 2015.

And he's not the only big name player over the last 20 years to see a decent drop in production late in series, let alone all time.

So while I certainly wouldn't label him as the quintessential, clutch player, I still think you should have a net positive view on what he brings to the table over the course of a playoff jaunt.
