ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. ;) )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

A 5-year career in this era basically is a rookie in an ATD context, but one capable of spurts of greatness. The history of hockey has some rookies excelling, so as long as he isn't a core player, say, on the third pairing and 2nd special teams units, then it's a realistic player to pick. If he had to retire today, he wouldn't be a HHOFer but he would be respected.

It's a reach, but I wanted him. I think he had the clear highest peak of any undrafted defenseman. And there has been a lot of modern players getting drafted recently with most at all time high positions.

I didn't want to risk someone taking him, especially with me having another pick soon. Alf Smith got sniped from me too.

I came across a mention of Alf Smith as a pioneer of Ottawa's passing system, starting from his junior days, in "Old Scores, New Goals." I thought it was interesting. Not sure if this came out in the pre-consolidation project.

During their first winter the Electrics won challenge games against both local and outside teams, including Perth and Carleton Place. In the winter of 1893-94 they joined the Ottawa City League and won the championship without losing a single game. The following winter the Electrics advanced by joining the Junior Amateur Hockey Association, then comprised of Montreal Hawthornes, Victoria Juniors of Montreal, Ottawa Juniors, and Montreal Maple Leafs. With Alf Smith on right wing they went on to become champions of the City League and champions of the Junior Amateur Hockey Association. Alf Smith turned pro with the Ottawa Senators and was with them for two Stanley Cups.

The Electrics played most of their games at Dey's Arena on Laurier. It is said that they virtually revolutionized hockey with a passing system which they developed to a new art and which Alf Smith continued on Silver Seven Stanley Cup teams when he played right wing with the great scorer Frank McGee at center.

I mean, Makar is certainly a ballsy pick. I can always respect the big swings even if they don’t always pay off.

At his best, he’s clearly “better” than many of the selections that typically go in this range..but in an ATD context this is still a player who hasn’t even reached 300 regular season games yet. So that’s a bit tough to get past. Maybe it’s an unwritten rule, but I’ve always considered that a player should probably have at least 500 regular season games played to be considered for the ATD. But from a pure ability standpoint he obviously belongs.

I suppose I don’t have a big problem with it as long as he’s sheltered a bit, maybe on a 3rd pairing with a defensively responsible partner.

Edit: Then again, Van and I chose McDavid back in 2020 and he wouldn’t have been at 500 yet. I remember we took a ton of shit for the pick.

Oh he's on a clear path straight to the hall of fame.. but despite his great start he doesn't have a lot of meat on the resume for here.. but maybe others will see it differently!

I don’t believe it did, thanks for sharing! It certainly meshes nicely with how we understand his game now.

Too bad assists weren't recorded much back then. Not even in the NHL early days until the 1930s were they diligently noted.

But I have read somewhere long ago that Alf Smith was talented at passing as well as being the nastiest jerk when dirty play broke out. He was a leader in scuffles.

I'm ok with Makar because he's actually proven on a playoff run. The young guys I'd be nervous about taking are ones that have just put up stats but haven't really proven they have their sea legs against the physical playoff competition.

One great postseason in an ATDers career is not proven performance at ATD-level competition. But it promises at least flashes of greatness.

I must admit that I was skeptical he'd be passed up by you or @rmartin65 on four separate occasions after you had each been championing him (with good reason) in the pre-consolidation project

Neely also came off the board slightly ahead of schedule which further solidified the urgency of taking him here

He wouldn’t have; we were taking him if he was there.

I know you guys plan picks rounds in advance, but it just breaks my heart.

I had Smith eyed up for this pick a couple rounds ago. And I knew @rmartin65 would take him if I didn't this round.

But he got nabbed.

He was a great pick for me in the pre merger project.

Changing our draft plans again

the-office-michael-scott.gif

We're happy to select George Armstrong, RW the perfect kind of player to fit in with the group of forwards we've accumulated so far. Brings a toughness and defense conscience to our incredibly offensively talented bunch, he will also wear the C for the Victorias this season joining Ebbie Goodfellow and Chris Chelios.

A big sigh of relief from the Chicago front office, as the pickings were getting pretty slim among Dmen. We're very happy to see two guys available that will not only make a great pairing chemistry wise, but who we think are on the same level as many of the Dmen taken this round and even last round.

From 1947-51 the Leafs won 4 Cups in 5 seasons. This guy was their best defenseman over that time period, a physical but clean stay at home defender who also was described as a fine passer who helped his team's transition game and even played on the PP (although he won't for us).
Chicago is very happy to select, Jimmy Thomson, D

As many of you probably know, Thomson was regularly paired with an offensive rushing defenseman, and they became known as the Gold Dust Twins. We're going to give Thomson an upgrade in that department by selecting a guy who fittingly has donned a gold sweater for his entire career. He's one of the best offensive Dmen of his generation leading his team in scoring each of the last 4 seasons, a 1x Norris winner who just missed a 2nd Norris by less than 2% of the vote to wunderkind Cale Makar. He also had two more 5th place Norris finishes earlier in his career despite likely being hurt by vote splitting with his teammate Shea Weber.
Chicago selects Roman Josi, D

Having picks so close together is generally beneficial in a no-trade draft; however, it does leave the team susceptible to runs on a particular position. Seeing as two coaches have already been selected, the Montreal Victorias are going to get on the leading edge of this run and are proud to select

Toe Blake, coach

Toe Blake is kind of a strange choice for a Marcel Dionne team. I can't think of a single center he ever coached that wasn't solid defensively.

It's weird how you want to call us a "Marcel Dionne" team he's maybe our 4th most important forward.

Regardless I think it's a bit reductionist to view coaching this way. Blake wasn't known to be a tactician he was an amazing leader who inspired his players to buy in and play for the good of the team.

From @Leaf Lander 2011 bio

Toe Blake was no tactician. During the past five years when I interviewed many former Habs players who played for Toe Blake, when asked what Blake’s offensive tactics were, they all recited the same sentence: advance the puck, hit the open man, and converge on the net. Simply put: a mere continuation of the tactics hone by XXX

Blake’s magic came from his leadership style which over the course of time took on a mystical, spiritual patina that would culminate in his apotheosis in the hearts and minds of Montreal Canadiens fans.

Toe led his players with an intricately balanced mixture of strength, subtlety, intensity, silence, anger, passion, and occasional humor. In return his players give him their collective hearts, minds, souls, bodies, blood, toil, tears, and sweat.

For a non-tactic specific coach, the structure of the team doesn't need to line up 100% with the pieces he had in real life.

No match is perfect, but this is pretty flagrant.

Toe Blake never:

1) Coached a poor defensive center (Dionne)
2) Coached a lineup led by a play-controlling winger (Jagr)

For (1), Blake always had the Béliveau/Henri combo at his disposition, with strong two-way 3C's to support them.

Maybe Dickie Moore satisfies (2) but that's a stretch given he played on Henri Richard's line, a very puck dominant center, and that Moore was just one of many among the forwards, with the big star being Béliveau.

Those are not random 3rd liners on your team, but the heart of your offense.

Can Toe Blake do it? I'm sure he can. Is he a great fit? I don't see it.

This is kind of cheating but Blake should at least had latter day Richard as a player and obviously played with him for a bit too. It's not the exact type of vibe as with a guy like Jagr, but I also think most coaches in general are smart enough to give talents like that - that don't fit into your typical mode - the rope they need to create.

That's a long way of saying I'm less worried about coaches with great talents than how the other parts of the team will fit together. Like Scotty Bowman was smart enough to let Mario be Mario even if he's probably the most anti-Scotty player I can think of.

Again you're focusing on the wrong parts for whatever reason for this Marcel Dionne Team (tm)

We are in no way trying to sell our team as the same as the 50s/60s Habs in terms of construction which is what you seem to suggest is necessary for a specific coach. Which for a non-tactic specific coach is really not necessary. There are plenty of other coaches who will be picked who are much more demanding stylistically in terms of roster construction.

It's weird how you focus on Dionne's defensive play. Based on what I've seen it's unlikely Dionne was bad defensively for his time. Does that suddenly make him average in an ATD for a scoring line center? Probably not but it's strange how you're so fixated on Dionne especially since we also have Nels Stewart.

If you actually read what I posted, it really doesn't seem like having our puck dominant wingers will be an issue just because the dynasty Habs weren't structured that way. It's not like Blake's specific style of coaching necessitated that.
