ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

I could have sworn I had a quote from an old paper listing him as a righ handed shot. I'll try and see if that's saved deep in the newspapers.com archives.

But yeah, photo/artists evidence showing as a righty....I'd go with that.

I'm going to double down on my opinion that guys who played point/coverpoint should be considered viable plays on either side, unless we see some weird evidence talking about them having particular struggles defending one side of the ice.

I'm just one guy with one opinion, but I'll argue this position until I am blue in the face. It makes no sense to label a guy a particular side just based on handedness, since we KNOW there are defenders and wingers that played their off side.

My vote- play him wherever you want him.

Wilson was our backup option if Josi wasn't available. I think Josi is a better fit with Thomson and simply the better player (and Wilson was one of my favorites growing up), but definitely a nice pick here.

I remember being a kid and my Dad complaining about him losing the hardest shot competition to MacInnis because Wilson's first couple shots didn't register on the radar. To be clear, I'm not claiming he had a harder or better shot than MacInnis, just telling a fun story.

The Dusters select HHOF Didier Pitre, the original Flying Frenchman, the first signing of the Canadiens after the 26-year-old then-star defenseman paired up with Lester Patrick in a 1909 Stanley Cup challenge by Edmonton following an impactful year with the Montreal Shamrocks in which he was valued as "without a peer as a defense player in the ECHA". A couple of years prior to that, he was in the earliest pro International leagues in which he was a two-time 1st-team all star, leading the 1906 IPHL in scoring. His speed impressed the Canadiens so much that he was moved up to right wing, where he excelled for well over a decade, until returning to defense in the early 1920's. In 1916 Lalonde won the scoring title with 28 goals and 6 assists, yet Pitre had more points, 24 goals and a league-leading 15 assists (in an era where assists were undervalued and underreported). Pitre scored a hat trick and was considered hero of the night in a game of the Habs 1916 Stanley Cup winning playoff run. The next year, at age 34, in Game 1 of the 1917 Stanley Cup playoffs, he scored 4 goals in a 8-4 win over Seattle. That year, in his 15th year of hockey, it was remarked then: "A great skater, Pitre appears able to travel with equal speed backwards or forewards." That same year he is dubbed "the idol of every French lacrosse enthusiast in the East". Two years later, a 19-year-old Frank Nighbor first played against Pitre and years later recalled that Pitre: "... tipped the scales at 190 and he could fly on those steel runners.... Pitre was not a dirty player but he was very foxy". That postseason, in another Stanley Cup game, Pitre and Lalonde both moved back to defense to address the Game 1 Western extra-skater rule that was more familiar to their opponent, winning the game though eventually losing to Portland in the series. "His checking is naturally hard and he is so big that everything he does appears glaring...". His nickname of "Cannonball" comes from his shot, deemed by many as the hardest of the era of which one HHOF goalie asked the league to let him wear a mask and another HHOF goalie retired to avoid the shots that have been known to break the back boards. In 1920 Pitre scored a Habs-leading 12 assists, four short of Nighbor's league-leading tally. The following year, in his 19th year of hockey, Pitre moved back to defense until his retirement in 1923 at age 40.
