ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Drumheller selects G Carey Price. Happy to get a player with his regular season peak and having carried a team to the finals as the 9th taken backup goalie.

Truly a shame this is where his legacy ends up after injuries and bad teams. Probably the most talented goalie ever imo, especially if you include size, athleticism, craft, flexibility and the advanced techniques he helped master, and yes that includes Hasek. His peers consistently voted to that fact and his era GSAx (Goals Saved Above Expectation) is far above his peers. If his knee had a few more games in it we might have put a scare into Tampa.

Just the peer voting and the underlying numbers make this pick a steal to me.

So for my backup behind Grant Fuhr, I'll keep it simple and take another 4 time Cup champion in Hap Holmes.

Then, for my last spot in the starting lineup, we'll go back to the 1910s as well... I didn't like him too much in the pre-merger project because his career length is just so short, but I feel that's less of a concern in the ATD. Scotty Davidson looks like a good fit for my checking line as its RW because his all-around game was so strong and he was huge among forwards for his era. overpass's ATD bio is pretty solid but I also wrote up a post on him here in the pre-merger project that shows how highly regarded he was before going to Europe.

Drumheller will draft LW Sid Smith. He finished top 10 in goals 5 times (top 5 3 times) and top 10 in pts 3 times while playing on 3 Leafs title teams in the late 40s and early 50s, including being the leading goal scorer on two of them. It sounds like he was known for scoring greasy goals in front of the net, while I have no need for a power play net guy as I have Brind’Amour, Leclair, and Parise, he was still top 10 in even strength goals three times, and I guess you can never have enough ugly goal scorers to be that surprise hero in a game 7, and I have a skill first winger in Vikulov on the 4th line to help him out.

Great pick with Price. So underrated, and had to work with so little, in the furnace of the Montreal market. Strong puck handler as well.

I believe he was the best goalie since Brodeur.

I feel like Wendel Clark would be pretty awesome as a guy playing 4th line for an ‘all-time draft team,’ so I’m happy to grab him.

I like it. I know he was not a goon per say, but I've been hoping for the return of goons on 4th lines. Fighters and goons were part of hockey history and the best ones should be drafted in the ATD.

1) The first was Frank Brimsek, from 1938-39 to 1942-43.
Supplemental Trivia A- Brimsek would have bid fair to be the lone Goalie to exceed the "5" total-- but WW II got in-the-way
Supplemental Trivia B- Charlie Gardiner would have likely popped that cherry before Brimsek, if Official AS plaudits had begun just one year earlier.

2) The second was Terry Sawchuk, from 1950-51 to 1954-55.

3) The third was Jacques Plante, from 1955-56 to 1959-60.

4) The fourth was Glenn Hall, from 1959-60 to 1963-64.

Plus, according to @EagleBelfour 's research, Vikulov played center with Kapustin and Anisin in 1974.

His makeshift line with Maltsev (who played C but also a lot of RW, with pivot Shadrin and with the C and LW Golikov brothers), ...and taking faceoffs, muddies the waters.

Vikulov started to play in CSKA and international team as partner of Firsov and undrated. Vikulov and undrafted started to play in youth team of CSKA there they were C and RW (Vikulov). Undrafted was always C and played C and listed everythere as C, thats why there are no doubts Vikulov played RW there. In all international games with undrafted C Vikulov listed as RW - since 1965 to 1969.
In 1969 in international games Vikulov started to play with Maltsev and Firsov. They are listed as LW Firsov, C Maltsev and RW Vikulov.
I highly doubt, that in that line Vikulov could be a C. As I said previously, when Tarasov formed his "system" Firsov played C and Vikulov RW. At 1969 Maltsev played C in his club and more often played C internationally - he was established C and I see no reasons why established C should be substituted to young RW who never ever played C before. Also, out of those 3 Vikulov is the worst defensively and the worst puck-distibuter.
In 1970 Vikulov started to play with other partners in international games. in these games he always listed as RW. Once he played with Starshinov and there are no doubts who played where. But there are 8 times when he plyed with another undrafted, who also played RW usually. This undrafted listed as C and Vikulov as RW. But this undrafted has an experience of playing C long before internationally and from time to time - for CSKA and Vikulov has not, thats why I suppose, that Vikulov played RW again here.
In 1971 he is back with Maltsev as C again (see above) and at the end of 1971 "the system" was born (see my previous post)
"The system" lived till the end of OG-72 and than Tarasov resigned and Vikulov came back to Maltsev internationally. Domestically Vikulov tried with different parners but always listed as RW.
In 73-74 he is out of international team and played again as international only at SS-74. In that time in CSKA he played with second undrafted and listed as RW or with another undrafted who was C the whole career (and Vikulov is listed as RW of course).
At SS-74 Vikulov played in Moscow part only. Once he played with Maltsev and Kharlamov and 3 times he played with Maltsev and another undrafted. This undrafted played C only the whole career. That's why I have no idea what research EagleBelfour did. Vikoulov listed as RW in all those games.
Later in 1974 Vikulov played with Maltsev and Kapustin (and listed as RW). In CSKA he played with established C.
In fact, I found only one game where Vikulov could be C - WC-75. He listed LW (!), another all-time RW listed C and another all-time RW listed RW, but it was more like occasion.
And I found ONE game, when he listed C - CC-76. And yes, he played with company of RW and LW, so that's a possibility.
I don't think thats enough to list him as C.
