ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

He took a lot of faceoffs. Bobby Clarke was often checking him.

And according to the Olympics website bio on him, his line with Kharlamov and Firsov was awarded Best Line in the Soviet championship playoffs six months before the Summit Series. Was Firsov the center?

Plus, according to @EagleBelfour 's research, Vikulov played center with Kapustin and Anisin in 1974.

So, ... Vikulov seems to be a RW who took faceoffs and played some center, but maybe not enough for all time RW/C designation?

His makeshift line with Maltsev (who played C but also a lot of RW, with pivot Shadrin and with the C and LW Golikov brothers), ...and taking faceoffs, muddies the waters.

For now I'll put Dolly Swift as an F although I haven't checked back his whole positional history, especially since in the early years they didn't specify the forwards much.

@rmartin65 might enlighten us on that.

In any case, he had a physical game and is a strong scorer, might be used in my Top 9, as a 4th liner or as a spare, depending how I want my team to go.

One of my favourite players from the pre-merger project and someone that rose very sharply in my mind.

Reading through contemporary reports, it's clear he had strong star power beyond just his point totals.

The only reason I didn't take Dolly Swift earlier is because I already have Frank McGee and Allan Cameron that I bumped up from their usual position, and I didn't want to fight too many battles. But I think Swift is more than qualified to play on a 2nd/3rd line as a physical scorer, and he was too good to pass up at this point.

Plus in his case he had an above average longevity for his era.

Suter-Weber with Rinne was a foundation to build championships on. But alas, small market team with small market mentality... let go rather than pay... drafted replacements well in Josi, Ellis, Ekholm... won a huge trade to get Forsberg, and made a finals run... but never ponied up the cash to get the big boys up front to give Rinne the horses to win cups! I cheered for the Preds for their defensive skill throughout the Rinne years. I did give up the team after Rinne left, made the new Golden Knights one of the secondary teams to cheer for (see my avatar). Note: to have just one team means to limit oneself to one game every other night or so. I try to follow and cheer for at least one per division. I still can't watch a Coyotes-Devils game. .... i became a Sabres fan the day they traded for my Canucks beloved rookie sensation Peca - we got a lazy Mogilny ugh; i ended my Buffalo cheerdom when Hasek left... the only teams that i always cheer for, through thick and thin are my first love Habs, Hometown 'Nucks and aince-the-day-Langway-left-Montreal,,... Caps.

And according to the Olympics website bio on him, his line with Kharlamov and Firsov was awarded Best Line in the Soviet championship playoffs six months before the Summit Series. Was Firsov the center?



Plus, according to @EagleBelfour 's research, Vikulov played center with Kapustin and Anisin in 1974.

In short - yes, Firsov was a center and could be listed as LW/C. But the detailed answer is very interesting itself. I'll give it later, cause I don't have time right now.
As for 1974 I'll give answer later as well.

For now I'll put Dolly Swift as an F although I haven't checked back his whole positional history, especially since in the early years they didn't specify the forwards much.

@rmartin65 might enlighten us on that.

As you noted, it gets really dicey with the pre-1900 forwards. I have records of 60 games (there are almost certainly more, but it will involve a lot more tedious, day-by-day type of newspaper reading to find them) that Dolly Swift played, ranging from 1882 to 1899. For the vast majority, the forwards are just listed as "forward". There are even several games where no positions at all were given. So we are going to be dealing with very small sample sizes when trying to ascertain Swift's position. Based on what I have, I would guess center or rover (he was described as an "Inside Home" once and a "RC" once, then I have another game where he is listed at center, and another where I have "center or rover?" written down). So 3, maybe 4 games out of 60 where I have even a guess of where he lined up. All lead me to think it was in the middle there, but it is still not a great lead.

Thank you. Reminds me of trying to figure out sidedness of defensemen based on 1-3 games out of their entire character when we are lucky enough that the newspapers mentions it at all, and then I wasn't even sure how rigorous they were in precising that.

...Tim Horton regarded him to be the toughest blue liner to beat in a one-on-one situation. He was nicknamed "Fireplug" for his compact stature and devastating body checks.

When you think of premier bodycheckers in hockey you think of Tim Horton, Eddie Shore, Lionel Hitchman and Scott Stevens. Well Leo Boivin belongs in this category as well. Boivin was known for his explosive hits to break up rushes, and he almost always skated away with the puck.

"Mahovlich has a breakaway! He's at the Boston blue line. Only Boivin between him and the goal. Big Frank dekes left. Now he shifts right, trying to sweep around the burly Boston defenseman . . . ...one of the best body checkers ever to come along. When Ted Green joined the team in the very early 1960s, it was Boivin who taught him the intimidating style of play and the finer points of body checking.

If nothing else, Boivin was favored by gravity. His body was squat, extremely low to the ice, so that his balance remained perfect when his 5'7", 190 pound frame crushed an opponent. More important, Boivin learned to synchronize his hip thrust in mid ice collisions so that he was able to torpedo an enemy attacker amidships.

Deserves more credit than he usually gets in these things.

Things I discovered when I was part of a franchise that picked him, last year:

1) If you have an eight letter crossword clue for "Leo Boivin move," the answer is "hipcheck,"
1a) If nine letters, it's "bodycheck."
2) The Children's Book "Little Leo Loves Hockey." Well, what was one of the results of Little Leo loving hockey? For one thing, he said he preferred playing Defense because it allowed him to be spend more time on-the-ice.
3) Rookie with reputation for slick moves reports to a team that has Boivin on it. Before practice, Boivin says something like 'please don't try any of those Fancy-Dan moves on me. I wouldn't wanna hurt'cha.' I forgot how long the prospect remained sore after the advice was disregarded.
