ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Did he play some LW? Probably. It was a fluid era. They were rovers and forwards at points in time.

But did he have greatness at LW?
He was a C who played RW with Bowie.

The question is how long and how well at LW?

I’ve been kind of in a hole here drafting a lot of players I’ve seen play, so I’d still like to grab someone who fits for me that played in some other eras. This player kind of had his time running at the top of the lineup and adapted into an effective role player winning 4 Stanley Cups in a row, and then 2 Calder Cups to make it 6 championships in a row. Philadelphia selects Ed Litzenberger, who has played both center and right wing, the latter being his likely position for us.

Three Rivers is going versatile again. He was used all over the F line by Arbour during the Islanders dynasty, though he predominantly played LW and C. The dude could absolutely fly. Was great on the PK due to his skating and reach. And he was clutch.

74 points (+32) in 74 playoff games over the 4 straight title years.

Only Potvin, Trottier, Bossy scored more points in the playoffs during their 4 year title reign.

He led the entire team in scoring on their final title run in 1983. 28 points in 20 games.

His 5 short handed goals and 9 short handed points were most on team.

Why not add another B to the roster?!?

I've also read in a hockey history book about Bowie and Russel as a C & RW duo.

What book? I'd love to read it, because it flies in the face of the reports of the day.

But did he have greatness at LW?

Yeah, his best seasons were there, since that is where he (overwhelmingly) played.

He was a C who played RW with Bowie.

He may have played C before coming to the Vics senior team, but he was a LW as a mature player. And why would he have to shift to wing to play with Bowie? Bowie was a rover.

The question is how long and how well at LW?

Just fine.

Look, this myth needs to die. For all the all star teams, Russel(l) was listed at

- wing by a 1905 unnamed "Montreal Man" (The Gazette, 17 February 1905 page 12), with Billy Gilmour on the other. Sides were not mentioned, but also in 1905 we have him at

- LW on the fan-voted all star team, with Gilmour on the RW (4 March 1905, The Montreal Star)

- LW on a team published in 1907 by The Ottawa Citizen, 1 March 1907 (page 8)

- LW in a team published by The Winnipeg Tribune from 27 March 1907 (page 6), originally Eastern and Western all-star teams reportedly chosen by The Ottawa Citizen

- RW on an All-Montreal team reportedly chosen by the Herald (obtained via The Ottawa Citizen, 1 April 1907 page 8)

- in the discussion for LW, but not ultimately picked by The Ottawa Free Press listed an all star team for the 1908 ECAHA season (I'm getting this through The Gazette, 26 February 1908 page 2)

"Tom Phillips, of Ottawa, is stationed at left wing without further ado. Blair Russell, of Victorias, is a grand player, but will always be on the bench while the Kenora man is in the game. XXXX, of Shamrocks, is a good man, and Ernie Johnson, of Wanderers, has played effective and showy hockey, but neither can be rated with Phillips, or even Russell. Phillips can skate and score, is an inveterate hand at checking back, and a clever puck-getter."

So, 5 of the 6 teams have him at LW. Sounds like a LW.

That's why i asked how long and how well at LW.

Two things can be true at the same time: It's entirely possible the Hall of Fame is not incorrect in stating Russel was a C who moved to RW when Bowie moved to C from his natural position of rover (as i cited a direct quote) AND ... Russel may have played the majority of his years at LW.

This isn't me taking a shot at your pick- I think he's just fine here, we are at that point in the draft where I think there is a pretty wide pool of players who are suitable, and it is really just about fit/individual GM interest in a player/team/era. But I have some questions-

Got more insight to him thanks to the pre-merger project, but 2 things stick out.

What new information actually came out about Marshall? Particularly, what information came out that would raise his profile? We've always known that he was versatile and played on several winners. If anything, I think the project lowered his standing. Was he ever more than the 3rd best player on one of his championship teams? We had this discussion a little bit here. I think there may be a case for 1903, but it isn't cut and dry.

Guy won everywhere he went.

I realize you aren't necessarily being literal, but no, no he didn't.

First- I have no record of him actually playing during the 1901 SC games he is credited with. Obviously I can't post what I do have here, since it is, by nature, full of undrafteds, but I don't have him listed. Maybe he got in as a sub somewhere and I missed recording it, but he wasn't one of the main guys according to the sources I have seen (The Winnipeg Tribune, 30 January 1901 page 2 and 5, The Gazette, 30 January 1901 page 2, and The Montreal Star, 30 January 1901 page 2 and he Winnipeg Tribune, 1 February 1901 page 5 and 7, The Gazette, 1 February 1901 page 2, and The Montreal Star, 1 February 1901 page 2). And if I did indeed err and miss him getting into those games, I think it speaks volumes that his contributions were so small that I overlooked them.

2nd- He didn't technically win with the Montagnards in 1907. While they were leading the league, they ended up withdrawing because they had been caught using ineligible players and were being forced to replay a game. Plus, the FAHL was not a strong league. It was almost certainly no better than the 3rd best league at the time (after the ECAHA and IPHL), and even that is probably only because of my ignorance of other leagues. And looking it over, he only played 3 games there, haha, so maybe we can ignore this comment.

3rd- The bigger one (since we'll toss the Montagnards example), is that he didn't win with the Montreal Shamrocks, in 21 games over the 1908 and 1909 seasons. Those were bad teams, but they are the only two seasons in the AHAC/CAHL/ECAHA that Marshall was in the conversation for best player on his team. And 1908 shouldn't have even been that bad- they had two already ATD-drafted players on it in Joe Hall (4 games), Didier Pitre (10 games), and now Marshall (9 games), plus three other fairly big names for the era that I can't mention yet because of our undrafted rule. But I think that this is more evidence that Marshall was more of a secondary piece than "the guy". Which is obviously fine here, considering how deep we are in the draft.

Incredibly versatile player.

I only have his 1902-1909, so he may have demonstrated play at other positions in his other seasons, but I think he was very solidly a Center/Cover for the aforementioned time period. Still, a very useful combination.

Looking at your roster, you actually have quite a few of the old-timers who bounced back between a forward position and a defense position- Taylor, Patrick, now Marshall. Was that intentional? You could do some really interesting things there, I'm excited to see what you guys do moving forward.

It's weird seeing guys like him available so late compared to previous years - when Hawerchuk was picked I thought he had gone way earlier.

One of my favourite players from the pre-merger project and someone that rose very sharply in my mind.

Reading through contemporary reports, it's clear he had strong star power beyond just his point totals.
