ATD 2020 Draft Thread V

It has been over 4 hours since Claude’s pick so I think Van and I are up?

Salt Lake selects C, Craig MacTavish

mact.jpg

- 4x Stanley Cup champion
- Killed 48% of his teams penalties
- 3 Top 10 short handed goal finishes (3, 8, 8)
- 3 Top 12 in Selke votes (4, 9, 11)

Nice Pick and timing!

For my spare forward, I'll pick a utility player who legit played all 3 forward positions. He can also fill in on either special team if there is an injury - Steve Sullivan, F

Sullivan was fast and tiny, but he wasn't afraid to use his speed to dart through traffic

Old bio: MLD 2011 Bios

I was really close to drafting Sullivan a couple times in the past week. In the end, I just couldn't do it. I've always has this strange uncomfortability with him that I've had a hard time explaining. The fact that he's mostly been a "bad team scorer" or at least a "bad offensive team scorer" was part of it, but that doesn't make him unique at this point in the draft.

His primary listed position is RW, and his secondary position is C. This made him look appealing as a spare forward. I didn't remember him much at center though. Plus on hockey-reference I noticed he had just 27 faceoffs in the last 288 games of his career. So I wanted to make sure that he was actually a center-capable player. For more faceoff stats you have to go to nhl.com because hr only goes to 07-08.

What I noticed about him when researching him is that he tended to score a lot more points when he was playing more center. In those final 5 seasons, he averaged 0.62 adjusted points per game while playing no time at center (0.1 faceoffs per game). In the previous seasons with Nashville, he had 1.37 faceoffs per game, and his 6th and 7th best seasons. Prior to that with Chicago, he had 6.98 faceoffs per game, and had his best five seasons. Age had something to do with that, too, but I believe so did the opportunity that came with playing center.

By VsX he looked like by far the best offensive RW on the board, but if you attempt to isolate his numbers as a winger, he no longer looked special. On the other hand, if you compared him to centers he came up short (no pun intended) because there's always a surplus of high scoring centers on the board. He seemed to put up points but was not good at any of the other things you want from a center, including being able to match up physically, play responsible defensively, or win faceoffs (from 1997-98 to 06-07, when he took all his faceoffs, among 142 players with 3000+, he was 129th at 45.5% win%). In the end it made me uncomfortable touting him either as the best offensive RW, or as a player who can fill in at multiple positions.

Renfrew started with a spare D, then a C/LW, so it would be nice to have a spare that can play RW. Let's go with Ulf Dahlen, RW/LW. Dahlen was not the best offensive winger left, but he's not particularly far off either, and had a long productive NHL career, unlike many on the board who had short spikes. Dahlen was known for his whole career as one of the best players at winning board battles and digging for pucks in the corners. He can eat some minutes on the 4th line in case of injury or in case the high-octane 4th line experiment isn't working.

On top of wondering what the hell happened to @The Macho Man who has been MIA for a month now, @papershoes hasn’t checked in with the ATD for awhile now as well and last logged on April 4th. I know he sometimes misses and then makes up his selections, but he always checks back in. It seems very unlike him to go MIA as well.

With risk of sounding like a broken record here, I truly hope all is well with everyone. Crazy and uncertain times right now, and when people just stop dropping by out of nowhere - regulars at that - it’s concerning.

Hopefully they receive a “tag” notification and can come let us know that they’re okay when they see it.

Just skip me.

I'm very worried about The Macho Man. I hate to say it, but the picture we have doesn't look good at all.

“I was really sick - I'm getting better and have to get some stuff at the office to work remotely. I'll make up my picks tonight but I'm fine.

As to whether it was/is corona - don't know. Can't know. Not high risk, not severe enough to be tested. Symptoms were consistent but while I felt like ass it was by all accounts mild.”

And then he just..stopped logging on.

From what I've read - and this is a very handwavy explanation because my medical knowledge is abysmal - COVID-19 first infects the lungs, and then you get flu-like symptoms for a week or so, but in some % of the people (0.5 to 4% or in that range), the virus penetrates the circulatory system (somehow through liquid accumulating in the lungs I believe) and after a short break (where people seem to get better), a 2nd infection happens in the circulatory system attacking many parts of the body, and those getting the 2nd infection are the ones who end up in ICU and die of cardiac arrest or what not. I have no way of knowing if this is correct or not, but I got this from following a bunch of nurses and doctors on social media.

It's extremely worrying in MM's case.

It's also possible he doesn't have internet wherever he is, and he can't move out due to the quarantine.

Man, that sounds scary as hell. I really hope he’s okay. Could be possible that life just got in the way, but it’s still very out of the ordinary for a regular poster to just drop off the map so to speak and not even check in once. I don’t want to jump to conclusions and assume worst case scenario but it obviously is highly concerning.

I wonder if anyone on this forum knows him personally? I mean being a regular poster maybe he’s facebook friends with someone on this site?

All we can do is hope for the best. Obviously something serious happened. But speculating, especially to the far end of the negative, isn't going to help anyone.

You're right, of course. Didn't want to be out of line here, I should have been more careful with my comments.

Edit: I edited to leave out the part that was too negative.

I agree that we shouldn’t go to worse case scenario. Still, it’s concerning. Let’s just hope for the best.

I know some steps were taken to get information, but I haven't got any news.

Also, have we decided on a playoff format yet?

Top 2 teams in each division make the playoffs I take it?

Pretty sure we decided on more than 2 teams per (5 team) division making it. Will look for the discussion tomorrow...

Hope everyone is ok.

Edit: Seems we never decided on a playoff format, doh! I'd rather the top 4 teams from every division make it, but I'm not going to be bent out of shape either way.

1 vs. 4
2 vs. 3

Obviously I'm not a participant, but personally I don't really get the appeal of intra-divisional playoffs. First you evaluate the teams of one division versus each other – and then you evaluate two of the same teams versus each other again, just a little more in-depth? Meh. Extra-divisional playoffs (e.g. Foster Hewitt Division #1 against Jim Robson Division #4, James Creighton Division #1 against Louis Magnus Division #4, etc) appear more intriguing, plus there could be a bigger possibility of upsets.

That said, this question obviously should be decided and will be decided by the GMs.
