Thanks for making the pick. I needed a tough, playmaking LW to finish my 2nd line, and those guys don't grow on trees. A small bonus that he was Starshinov's playmaker in real life.

My Lafleur team has a lot of Soviets on it, so it's nice to get one worthy of wearing a letter.

Top 6:

Vladimir Krutov - Sid Abel (C) - Guy Lafleur
Boris Mayorov (A) - Vyacheslav Starshinov - Bobby Bauer

I think Mayorov is better than Starshinov.

I basically flipped a coin when I took prentice over him.

It's a shame that Mayorov's prime ended just before they started Soviet Player of the Year voting. We know Starshinov seems to have been considered the #2 Soviet forward behind Firsov for the last 3 years of his prime (which were the first 3 years of that award).

Lol. You really don't get it. I am nit confused:

He averaged over 7 PIMs per game (200+ PIM a season) for most of his career. That IS MORE THAN THREE 2-minute penalties, or a 5-minute major and a 2-minute minor.

I recall clearly his career in Washington, and a lot of games from his Quebec days. He in the penalty box was expected. He was an important factor in so many games. The Caps had several quality pkers fortunately.

Both your math and your logic are way off. He has about 3,500 PIMs in about 1,400 games. That’s 2 and a half minutes a game, or one minor penalty and a bit if you assume they’re all minors. While dropyourgloves is down now, leftover search results suggests he fought 236 times, which would account for 1,180 of those minutes, none of which put his team short handed. That’s ignoring any misconducts he might have taken, which come ten at a time and also don’t put a team short handed.

Without getting hard numbers, it’s reasonable to say he took a minor every other game.

nhl.com has the actual numbers. Hunter is the all-time leader in penalties (not minutes) and minor penalties, and not by a little bit. Would be nice to know how many of those minors were coincidental.

NHL.com Stats
If the number I found for fights is anywhere close to accurate, probably about 80 of them were coincidental, but that’s certainly not enough to go by.
The list is predictably dominated by the 1980s. My guess is that a VsX-like system would put Red Horner in top - over his career he took 1.6 penalties for every one Eddie Shore took, while Hunter took 1.3 for every one taken a certain winger who I think is I drafted but probably coming up soon. You’d want a points minimum for such a study, as many players from roughly 1980-2010 would be crowding the penalties leaderboard while having almost no effect on the game itself.

Yes Starshinov is a better goal scorer.

Mayorov is a much better set up man - maybe the second best Soviet playmaker behind Makarov.

..slowly starting to display his incredible skill with great playmaking ability and a great hunger for scoring. But he also was a fierce competitor who would do whatever it took to win - including bending the rule book now and again..

Wings Of Fire said:
As a player, Jack was a nuisance to opposing teams and was very crafty in the way he wove through their defenses. He was tough and he got into fights on a regular basis.

Adams was the scoring leader in the PCHA one year, then was the Vancouver top scorer with 6 goals against Toronto in the Stanley Cup playoffs, scoring key goals in a cup victory another year.

"A great digger and fiery leader", Adams had a motto: "KNOCK THE PUCK AWAY FROM THE MAN, OR KNOCK THE MAN AWAY FROM THE PUCK."

Can I just say that I’m absolutely LOVING the two-team per GM format? I was a tad bit skeptical before we started but I already feel like it wouldn’t be as fun if we went back to the old format. I’m having a blast with this. The team building portion is the funnest part and getting to do it 2x is great. What’s everyone else thinking so far?
