If you show a little faith in JBD's underlying metrics and the notion that he can take the next step, him playing with Chabot starts to sound just fine as a stop gap.

The smallest thing pushes some people so deep into the cave of negativity around here.
I agree.

I don't fault anyone cuz we all surely have some PTSD with how rough the last couple seasons were, but I think it's not quite the panic some do.

Ullmark on the other hand, ya that would concern me. He's the biggest upgrade we got this year and we need him big time.

Ughhh. My hot take is that an injury to Zub is a top 3 worst injury this team could have.

Jensen
Hamonic
JBD

on the right side is nightmare fuel for a coach. And fans.

Fingers crossed that it's just a day to day thing.
Atleast its better than last year. They have Jensen, Addison and Yakemchuk on top of JBD and Hamonic. Last year they literally had no one.

Completely ignoring the fact they have Jensen and Addison at their disposal. Which they didnt have last year and the emergency of a stop gap in Yakemchuk until Zub is healthy.

Exactly.

This team's depth and makeup is 180 degrees from what it was last year. It is nothing shy of remarkable how Staios has retooled this team. Every team has holes on paper to start the season. If JBD or Addison sliding into the #2 RD spot for a handful of games is our biggest hole that is more indicative of how good we're looking than bad.

If Zub is out ofr any amount of time, it's JBD's chance to prove he's a regular NHLer. We'd be so set if he can become a solid 2RD

Are JBD’s underlying metrics actually good? Serious question as I am not someone who regularly looks at such things so I have no idea what they are for him.

I'll try to find it later but a couple weeks ago something was posted about him having some shockingly high advanced stats. Don't recall which ones specifically and they aren't in the JBD thread but will try to back up later.

Advanced stats last season had Sanderson Zub as the 10th best D pairing in the NHL.

Can't let go of this guy. If the Redden-Chara situation comes up again between him and Chabot, I hope we learned our lesson (though hopefully we can keep both and Chabot turns himself around).

Zub is great. He is my favourite defenceman. I like how he plays defence and enjoy watching the little things he does. In someways I think he is our best defenceman.
We are lucky to have him.

Such an old school defenceman.

Uses his high hockey IQ not to look flashy but to be a steady stabilizing presence.

Wayyy more valuable than Chabot.

The team doesn't work without Zub and good luck getting a team to give you their Zub.

We’ll try to sign whichever of Zub or Jensen is better over the next 2 season, and whichever has a more reasonable ask.

By the time their deals expire, Yakemchuk will be the top pair RD.

Sanderson - Yakemchuk
Kleven

I think those 3 are the only sure things to be on this team for the next 3-4 seasons.

build a better culture here and players like Zub and Jensen will be easier to find and attract

Yakemchuck doesn't fill Zubs role and neither does Jensen.

Zub is a top pair caliber matchup shutdown D.

Players like Zub are just rare. And every team in the league would fight for one. So you either have to draft them and develop them or get lucky like we did. Hard to get them through FA too.

There are more Chabots out there than there are Zubs.

He’s a 2nd pair complement to an offensive guy. That’s what he’s paid to be, and that’s what he is.

Slavvin is a top pair matchup shutdown D.

Zub, who I like, is not close to a Slavvin. He’s a Jake McCabe.

players like Zub aren't super rare

I would say Zub is a good top 4 D but not a for sure top pairing. If he is on your top pair he can't be the best player on his pairing

He's one of the best defensive defenceman in the league. He was part of one of the best top pairs in the league.

Losing Zub on our team to injury is the worst thing that could happen to this team other than losing Ullmark and Sanderson to injury.

Winning is just as much about being solid defensively as it is about scoring goals.

Okay, we lose Zub to injury how are you going to replace him since he isn't super rare? Who are you targeting?

I didn't say he was a #1 dman just that he was top pair worthy.

Much rather have Zub on my top pair than Chabot.

Zub is really good complimentary player to a solid partner. Similar to the Nick Jensen's of the world. You can find players like that. As others have said Yakemchuk should also be in the top 4 when Zub's contract is up

nick jensen is 34 years old and has averaged more than 20 mins in a season only once in his nhl career on a non playoff team.

yakemchuck is an offensive rover, zub is a defensive specialist.

He is a specialist from scoring from the back right position in the offensive zone. ;)

Best in the NHL!
