I'm sure Shea Theodore won't be the only player who gets hurt in the silly tournament.

It's just kind of funny it happened to a Vegas player, so that everybody can cry about how they will undoubtedly Kucherov him on LTIR until the playoffs start, trade for some star replacement, and recycle that whole conspiracy theory.
You called it, that's exactly what they are doing.

I don't doubt that these guys are injured, I just have a hard time believing that it is pure coincidence that it always happens before the TDL AND they just happen to always be out until game 1 of the playoffs.

could you imagine if Saros get has an “injury”? Or Forsberg?
Not like it would make much difference this season. However as I said on the main boards, the issue isn't so much of whether it is a legit injury or not, my problem is the fact there seems to be two kinds of healthy. There is regular season healthy, which can mean anything, and then playoff healthy which means no matter what it is if a player is willing to play through it then its ok. It creates a level of hypocrisy, and is the reason I pretty much disregard anyone that bring up what the NHLPA will and won't agree too.

In the telecast they mentioned that Trotz decided not to bring Lankinen back. I had always heard that Lanky didn't want to come back because he wanted a better opportunity to start.

Not sure which one it is, but the way this 4 Nations thing has gone and if the former is true ... man, the goalie situation was just bungled beyond belief.

:baghead:

PS: Granny with the OT winner.

I don't believe much that comes out of Trotz mouth but based on his comments it makes sense he didn't bring him back. Askarov was supposed to be the backup, Wedgewood was supposed to be in the minors. I doubt Lanky wanted to stay knowing that he may end up in Milwaukee.

So it's probably a combo, Trotz knew he wanted more playing time, Trotz needed someone that didn't mind going to the minors.

I'm not going to claim to be able to read Wedgie's mind, but he's been an NHL BUG since the 20-21 season. Also, Trotz signed him to a bigger contract than Lanky and for 2 years, while Lanky got 1 year deals. So there is a good argument there that Trotz might have actually thought Wedgie was an "upgrade" of some sort. He was coming from another team after all. Also Trotz signed the other Matt Murray at the same time to play in Milwaukee.

Both Askarov and Lanky would have been cheaper and better options than Wedgie in hindsight. Wedgie just wasn't suited, like at all, to play in the Bruno defense-optional system clearly.

Having a BUG that we felt comfortable with who could've taken more of the load off Saros would have been a reasonable plan, but like everything else it all exploded in Barry's face.

Actually Lankinen was making more per season than what Wedgewood signed for, he just got 2 seasons at 1.5 where Lankinen had been making 2 mil so I wouldn't necessarily call it a bigger contract, it just had an extra year tacked on which I'm sure Lankinen could have gotten but it was pretty clear Lankinen was always about keeping his options open.

The only reason Lankinen is making less this season is that he just happened to be the guy that got hung out there without a chair when the music stopped and had to take whatever he could get.

Murray was signed to play in Milwaukee as well, but at the time if Askarov was the backup that would have given you 1 goalie in Milwaukee. Remember the other guy didn't come into play until the Askarov trade happened. Wedgewood would have been that second goalie.

It's fine, I get it. This whole "two teams" thing, it's not for everyone. Just, the offer's out there since that's part of how I coped and it's the best I can do to help.
I'm probably the closest...my sister and husband lived in Blacksburg (?) And always would take my dad and I to Preds and other games, probably 20 over the years. Still hate the cannon.

Thanks for this correction. I thought I remembered Lanky signing two 1-years deals at 1M each. The first contract was exactly that, but the second was 2M for 1 year. So Wedgie got the same deal up front. 3M for 2 years. I don't really think that changes the calculus. Lanky is a better goalie IMO and would've been worth 3M for 2 years. Wedgie flamed out in world record time and as such is a pretty indefensible signing.

Y'know how there's that thing where there are some players whom everybody absolutely hates... except the fans of the team they play for? I think the cannon's like that for the CBJ. ;) The moment that I knew the NHL was absolutely getting this outdoor game thing right was when I heard they were bringing it to the Shoe.

I dont know, I personally love the cannon. But I might also be an outlier in terms of being an opposing fan.

I imagine that Lankinen didn't really want a paycut. Trotz might have thought $2M was a tad pricey for a guy playing behind his superstar 9-year workhorse Saros. So he got Wedgewood "cheaper". :eyeroll: Then traded Askarov, then Wedgewood sucked, then he traded him, then Saros sucked too and Lankinen played better than even the superstar workhorse. What a sequence of unforced errors. :help:

That $2M contract was Barry's decision. If he didn't think Lankinen was worth that much, he shouldn't have offered him that contract the first time.

Yes, it is a continuously compounding interest of errors.

It would have been soooooooooooo easy to just have kept the status quo... don't extend Saros early, re-sign Lankinen for 2x$2M - he could push Saros for starts if Saros was still going to struggle - and heck, give Askarov that same contract that San Jose gave him with guaranteed NHL time next year. We'd then be in a position to really evaluate whether or not to keep Saros based on his present tense performance. With our goaltending completely secured past him with Lankinen and Askarov.

Might be seeing Saros here soon
Why? Give me hope.... 🙏

I don't think it was because Wedgewood was cheaper, I think it was because Wedgewood was willing to play in Milwaukee and Lankinen wasn't. I don't even think he traded Wedgewood because he sucked, he traded him because Colorado offered a younger guy they liked.

That Wedgewood contract also worked out that most of the cap hit could be buried.

The real mistake was giving Saros that contract early. I think Askarov wants out regardless of the Wedgewood signing.
