yeah, thats pretty much how i think of it.

Hextall might finally be addressing Philadelphia's PIM issue. We all know they love their Broad Street Bullies persona, but leading the NHL in penalty minutes year after year is not helping their cause.

This move shaves 77 penalty minutes alone.

No one is saying Umberger is a gem, but in a third line role, he can get around the ice a lot better than Hartnell at this point. They are both terrible contracts, but getting rid of one of Holmgren's anchor contracts is moral victory as well.

i guess. i just think Hartnell is a much better, and more impactful player. Umberger has been less and less effective.

Being stuck with Hartnell until he's 37 might have factored into this as well. The Flyers think they have younger guys they can work into the lineup and he'd be in the way. Umberger only has two years left on his contract compared to Hartnell's five. The idea--to take a step back now to take two steps forward later on. Still you'd think Hextall could have gotten a bit more for him. In the eyes of a lot of Flyers fans he's gotten off on the wrong foot.

Hurricanes re-sign Ron Hainsey. Three years with $2.83-million cap hit. UFA market for D gets uglier.

Great deal for Carolina, Hainsey is a solid, legit 2nd-pairing D-man. Cheaper than the vastly inferior Klein who apparently has "a great contract".

Anyone who believes that are out to lunch imo.

Great signing indeed. I don't think the Canes trade for Staal at the draft now.

Note to NHL: Do not invite Cuba Gooding Jr. back to the Awards show next year.... He wasn't funny at all... Annoying in fact....

The NHL awards are a joke. Especially the Norris voting.

Chara got more votes than Weber LOL.

They go by name so much it's ****ing ridiculous. 3rd time Weber is robbed of a Norris.

And McDonagh finished 8th. Behind Pietrangelo who probably had his worst pro season, Doughty, and Suter. I'm speechless. Like do these ****ing idiots watch the games? Or do they just stat watch and throw darts at a dart board filled with high Canadian draft picks?

It's like the MLB writers who hand out all the awards. Absolute morons who don't even bother looking at the big picture.

How about Henrik not getting one GD vote for Hart but Nyquist, Marleau and Jagr do.

McDonagh is American. The last American to win the Norris was Leetch in 1997.

McDonagh was playing like the best dman in the league before his injury.

Chara had his worst season in years in 2014. Reputation nomination.

And Crosby got Selke votes.

Crosby.

The Media suck.

Lundqvist was the best goalie in the world from mid-December to mid-June.

He's the best goalie in the game.

I'm at the point where I don't think it's debatable.

Marleau didn't even lead his team in points LOL.

I'm literally speechless. The awards are usually a ****ing joke but this is just horrendous.

Kreider was the 10th highest ranked rookie. Behind Sean Monahan and Olli Mattaa LOL. Mattaa finished 5th, in front of H. Lindholm and Trouba. Awful. Just ****ing awful.

Looks like somebody came to their senses.. fair deal, still probably wouldn't give it to him though.
Ryan Callahan is on the verge of signing a long-term extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Sportsnet has learned.

The 29-year-old was eligible to pursue unrestricted free agency on July 1, but a source indicated that a new deal with the Lightning is “imminent.” While the precise terms of the extension weren’t immediately available, it is believed to be in excess of five years and worth as much as $5.5-million per season.

laughable that he wanted 49/7 from us and then hours before he can start talking to other teams as a ufa he settles for 5.5 per for 5 years.

btw if they signing becomes official, we'll get tampa's 2nd rounder in 2015 and tampa gets out 7th in 2015 to complete the msl trade

Well 5.5 in the state of Florida >>>>> 6 in NY

will save a ton on taxes

NY State tax is 8.82% on taxable income of more than $1,029,251 (according to google). So that's still less than 6M. Now if he also chose to live in NYC that would add another 3.876%, but not all Rangers do.

Bottom line is he overplayed his hand thinking that since the Rangers typically grossly overpay, they would do the same for him. Turned out that was not the case. He should have taken the 6x6 when he had the chance. I'm glad for Rangers fans he was too stupid to do so. Also happy we get a 2nd round pick back.
