Tell that to the 2012 Rangers.

The team that lead the league in wins?

The reason a team beat you means they worked harder. Stats are ruining the game of hockey IMO and a LOT of people will agree with me. But I guess I can't complain as much anymore since everything is moving forward I guess I have to jump on the Stat train :(

How about we agree to disagree. Stats tell you how well players do but you still need the player himself to record the stat, so everything needs everything

They lost in OT in game 6 with a scrum in front of the net.but yeah sure lol
If they had so much heart, why didn't they win the scrum????!!!

Exactly. That's the big flaw in analytics. If players suddenly stop playing, there will be nothing to record. Gut test wins again.

Yes. They lost to the Devils because of puck possession. Puck possession so overwhelming it skewed the shots on goal total in favor of the Rangers in Games 5 and 6.

Shots on goal don't beat goalies. Puck possession does.

Hank playing perhaps the worst game of his career in Game 5 didn't help matters either.

Bingo.

The Dellow hire REEKS of desperation. Lou was forced by Devils ownership to hire a similar guy.

We're not going to see if this Corsi BS will have a lasting impact on the game until an organization uses analytics as the strategy from to bottom up.

How did the Red Wings and Devils build their mini-Dynasties and runs of dominance? Colorado? The Islanders?

How did they ever build those powerhouses without the benefit of Corsi as a tool?

The Devils, Sens, and Canucks were top-10 in possession last season. Montreal was 26th, Colorado was 24th and Minnesota was 23rd.

Boston was 3rd and won the Presidents trophy? Why did they lose to 26th Montreal?

Goaltending. Which is why the Devils beat the Rangers in the CF.

Puck possession isn't even something that needs to be measured by stats

its quite obvious that a large majority of the best teams in the league are very good at possessing the puck if you watch them, and its a big part of why they are good.

Kings and hawks for one.

Can't compare it that much before because the movement in corsi began only a few years ago.

It's weird though, HF vehemently is against it, yet major hockey blogs and now management teams are looking into it.

I'm not against it. Like others said, it's a tool to beef up analysis. But it's not THE explanation, which is what the baseball nerds did with WAR.

I don't need Corsi/Fenwick to tell me the Kings and Hawks are great possession teams. They should be, because for five years both teams were lottery teams and acquired multiple franchise players.

You'll see. Edmonton will be a contender in three years and everybody will say it's because of the analytics turd they just hired.

A good possession team lost to a bad one in one playoff series?

Throw Corsi away, it's clearly useless.

I know, right? They also beat Tampa, who was 10th.

Pitt, who was 15th, beat Columbus who was 13th.

In 2013, Pitt was 18th but miraculously beat the Islanders, who were 13th. Then they beat 7th-ranked Ottawa.

Ottawa was 7th, but beat the 6th Ranked Habs

Chicago was 3rd but beat the top-ranked Kings.

San Jose was 11th and beat 8th-ranked Vancouver.

I'm losing count. Is that 8 series in the last two years where a better possession team was beaten in a playoff series?

The Devils were the 2nd and 4th best possession team IN THE LEAGUE the last two seasons.

Can you win a shootout via puck possession? I mean, I know Jagr tends to be deliberate on his shootout attempts but hey.
