Well, now that we've got Stempniak, it'll be interesting to see where the others still out there land. Seto, Booth and Penner still without deals.

Still wouldn't mind signing Seto, but we probably don't have room for him now. I don't know about the other two.

Booth is pretty much injury prone at this point I think.

Penner has always had motivational issues.

If we could get Booth signed to the same deal Stempniak or Lombardi got...

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Hagelin-Miller-St.Louis
Booth-Brassard-Zuccarello
Lombardi-Moore-Stempniak

That would be really solid depth. We could roll 4 "scoring" lines.

Ridiculous speed up and down the lineup as well. Stepan and Staal would be the only average to below average skaters.

Doubt we have the cap space after the RFAs are signed, though.

I'd still have Stemp on the 3rd line (I think his strong ES play would help Brass), but that would be a very good bottom 6.

Assigning numbers to lines isn't how this coaching staff operates. Tortorella may have had clear cut 1-2-3-4 and used only two of them, but that isn't what Vigneault and Arniel do.

In the most critical moments of the playoffs Vigneault rolled all of his lines. And the reason he was able to do that was he built each unit's confidence over the season by giving all of them ice time, and sticking with players through their struggles, Pouliot and Zuccarello specifically.

Fact is, there are units and pairs that have proven chemistry, and it is highly unlikely that the coaching staff will be looking to dismantle the remaining chemistry after the exodus of players via free agency that just occured at the start of this month.

There are at least 5 new forwards that will be regulars, including the 13th, and 2 new defensemen, including the 7th.

Carl Hagelin played on what some would label the "2nd line" all season, while Brassard and Zuccarello played on the "3rd line". This team has 5 "top 6" wingers.

There are no lines 1-2-3-4 with this coaching staff. There are 4 lines and they all play. Plain and simple. The only positions that have a huge disparity in ice time between units are the defense and goaltending, where there is a clear cut #1 and #2 defenseman and a clear cut #1 goaltender. Otherwise there is going to be very little disparity. That was a strength and a reason we got as far as we did.

This x 10000. Great post!

Speed and depth is what got us as far as we did, and it's what going to get us back (with our solid D--team and top 6--and goaltending, of course). With some timely goal scoring and an improved PP (with the addition of Boyle), we can be competing for the conference lead all season long. We won't have the half-season, new system shock we did last year.

For the returning guys, the expectations should be to come out of the gate hot and maintain consistency because the familiarity is there.

I think we will miss Stalman and Boyle over the long haul, but, the new guys should fit in well. Not just in character fitting in the locker room and away from the rink, they are solid people. But, also on the ice. They should fit the system and identity well. Lombardi and Stempniak may seem like trivial signings, but they could pay huge dividends. They bring the speed and versatility that was a staple of our team during our run. And Boyle, hopefully, can handle the 5v5 and hopefully improve the Power Play. Even Kostka could wind up being and underrated pick up, he can fly as well.

We have a bunch of guys who can take faceoffs. Most of our forwards now can play the penalty kill.

Personally, i like this roster, warts and all, i think there is some solid depth and some upside there.

I think it's safe to say that Kostka and Allen will most likely push for the 3rd pairing D spots... if either one happens to be a better option, expect Klein and/or J.Moore to be shipped out for a forward upgrade, which would be VERY welcoming

“@FriedgeHNIC: Kreider (NYR) requests $2.8M. Rangers have offered a two-year deal at $1.9, then $2.2.”

Was hoping for a long-term deal to get done. In two years Kreider is going to be a beast and will get paid as such.

Or he'll fail to live up to his potential and become a massive burden if you sign him to a long term extension.

Leafs restructure front office; hire 28-year-old advanced stats advocate Kyle Dubas

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired wonderkid Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds general manager Kyle Dubas, 28, to be the club's new assistant general manager, according to a report from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail. The Leafs have also shown vice president of hockey operations Dave Poulin and assistant general manager Claude Loiselle the door.

A former player-agent with Uptown Sports Management, Dubas has worked as the general manager of the OHL's Greyhounds since 2011. An outspoken proponent of "advanced stats" and analytics in hockey, under Dubas' leadership the Greyhounds have gone from being a 24-win team in 2010-11 to a 44-win team this past season.

While there may not be 1, 2, 3, or 4, each does have a role and expectation and there is a rhyme or reason to who he puts out there. Chances are he isn't putting Moore's line out there with 2 minutes left and down by a goal. He will put them out there with two minutes left and up by a goal though. He may put them out twice if there is a stoppage via a timeout. He will play them in the 3rd at crucial points - to neutralize a top line and then get the matchup he wants with another line, call it a scoring line, who also gets a rest. While it may not be 1, 2, 3 or 4, there is a checking line. There are scoring lines. And he does look for matchups to neutralize certain lines and take advantage of matchups elsewhere. It's kind of the same thing as labeling by number with the understanding that each number has a meaning.

Wow this lineup has tons of sandpaper in it

Jesus. AGM of an NHL team at age 28? This dude is living my dream.

What an ***hole!

Antoine Roussel signed a 4 year extension worth 2.00 cap hit. He is slightly older than Kreider and produced a little bit less. Would love to lock up Kreider to a similar deal with a cap hit of 3.0

Good move for the leafs. Having dinosaurs like carlye and nonis who completely neglect the interpretation of advanced stats is a reason for their collapse.

Easily the worst GM/Coach duo in the league.

Yeah, but your advanced stats said that Clarkson is better than Callahan

"Advanced" stats don't make conclusions. People do using them, and sometimes make mistakes in doing so.

What methodology did you use to conclude that Taylor Pyatt is better than Brian Boyle?
