Who needs McDavid? If they had a better goalie, maybe another defenseman, they'd be just as good as us. LOL.

Also a few good veterans. Still it's far from a sure thing that they will actually improve next year. They're goaltending is a complete question mark and they lost MacDonald and Moulson/Vanek. Trading for Vanek and thereby "going for it" was a pretty risky move bordering on stupid - at least so early in the season.

Isles retain their 5th, ship 2015 1st round pick to Buffalo.

God, I normally don't root against the Isles, but I want nothing more than for them to be in the lottery next season. Just because after the MSL trade one of my friends posted on Facebook:

"THEY GAVE UP A PICK IN THE McDAVID DRAFT!?!"

YES. YYYYYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSS *salivating*

If they gave up this year's pick instead, that would be a horrendous message to send. They'd basically be saying "yeah, there's no way this team is good next season".

It's the same kind of psychology that there was behind Lou keeping that Matteau pick, except there's actually a chance they'll be better next year than they were this year.

I thought Vanek was the right call, maybe not the right player but whatever. They just looked good in a playoff series and there was a ton of positive energy for once; this year set them back a lot. I still maintain, as I have for a couple years, that if they just blindly overpay UFAs they'll be a good playoff team in a good position for the future. They need guys who can play tough NHL minutes now.

But Vanek for a 1st so early in the season was a huge and IMO unnecessary gamble. If the Isles are still in playoff contention come deadline day, then it would've been a good ballsy move. And he would've been cheaper as well...

I don't disagree at all, in fact, I agree 100% it's exactly what I said the Islanders need to do.

I just like seeing what goes around, coming back around. - Justin Timberlake about Sean Avery

EDIT - Looks like they locked up Halak to a 4 year, $18mm deal.

Look out, Hank, you're not the best goalie in NY anymore :sarcasm:

Trading Moulson away, imo, showed a huge lack of hockey IQ from the front office. They moved a guy who had tremendous chemistry with the franchise player. A guy who played in the tough areas, had a decent work ethic and someone they should have considered a core player. They moved him plus assets for a rental. If they were "going for it" they should have retained Moulson and moved other future assets. Trading future assets and core players in a win now move makes it a stationary trade. Or the worst case scenario occurs like last season.

It screamed of an inexperienced, stab in the dark attempt at... spmething. I don't know. They should be building slowly like the kings. It almost seemed like an attempt at saving snow's job but there he is still.

And what does him being in the draft say about the rest of the draft? Why do some people rate an entire draft based on this 1 supertalent. The 1st overall pick will most likely go to Edmonton, Buffalo or Florida.

It's a damn good draft. It could rival 2003.

Plus, they could trade that pick this year and get a good vet in return. IMO, I think that might happen if the right player is in play. Isles need to win now, if for anything, keep Tavares happy, healthy, protected with some depth.

I could not agree more. Even at the time it was a knee jerk trade that left most people scratching their heads. It reeked of an amateurish, impatient move that Sather would make circa 2002. I think the Islanders bring him back over the summer if the bridges weren't burned, though.

Maybe they'll trade the pick for Jason Spezza :sarcasm:

If the Sabres end up with the worst record in the league again, and the Isles finish in the lottery and win it... just imagine. McDavid and Eichel. Rebuild initiated, rebuild complete.

I still think Florida surprises a lot of people next season.

MacKinnon is more like Stamkos. Ridiculous shot and speed, good playmaking.

McDavid is more like Crosby. Excellent playmaker and very high hockey IQ. McDavid is very Joe Sakic like in the way he approaches the game.

Does McDavid also ***** and moan about calls?
