general update on this Draft if anyone cares to

"Top heavy" with Schaefer (offensive d-man) likely going first with Hagens (college forward) likely going second. Then there's another tier after that of maybe 4 players like Misa and Martone who project to be decent forwards. And after that it seems to be a mix of rankings from the various places that do rankings.

So... pretty shit, then?

Figures.

Lets say Chicago gets pick 2 and the Pens get 4. If Schaefer goes first, would Chicago trade 2 for 4+? Theyve had 8 1sts the last 3 drafts, 4 of which were used on centers. The Pens get Hagens and Chicago still gets Misa/Martone to play with Bedard.

Chicago still has a shitton of picks themselves. I don't know if they care to trade down to acquire a couple more marginal picks

Maybe? We won't know for, like, 6 years.

Well sure. But shallow usually equals pretty bad.

Then again I'm sure they've said that about plenty of drafts that have ended up being terrific. Though I couldn't say which ones off the top of my head. Frankly it usually seems like the experts are more right than wrong when it comes to the quality of the overall draft. With the exception of the COVID years which were just a tossup.

The problem is we can't afford the assets to move up. I'd be very happy with Haggens or Misa at that point.

Pens only had to trade a 3rd and a prospect to go from 3OA to 1OA and select Fleury. Depends how Chicago sees the board. If they can take the same player and add an asset, then why not. Pens just need to out bid the other suitors.

That was considered even then as a pretty remarkable draft though wasn't it?

I feel like in a draft such as this there is a real fear if you are a GM/scouting dept. that you miss on a talent with just one slot of difference.

It depends on what they know about the player coming after. Moving down two spots, if you're sure who the #2 and #3 will be, and they aren't your guys, is no big deal.

My thing is, if im Chicago im targeting Misa/Martone if I cant get Schaefer which is why I think theres a sliver of hope. They get an asset and still get their guy

Disagree, if they draft 1 or 2 ov, they are 100% taking Schaefer or Hagens. Adding Schaefer to Lebshunov or having a one-two punch of Bedard-Hagens is what they will want.

Here’s a question…since you aren’t allowed to win the lottery back to back years (right?)

So if someone came to you and said “you have a choice….you can either get the number 1 pick this year. Guaranteed. Or…you could not get the number 1 pick this year but have a shot at it next year?

You can win the lottery up to two times in five years. Furthermore, those restrictions only count if you move up in the lottery; the worst team getting the 1OA doesn't move up and therefore can still win twice within the next five years.

I think people would be silly to pass up on the guaranteed lottery win just to get a chance at a lottery win in the next 3 years. Schaefer is more on the Owen Power tier of #1 picks but he's still a legit #1 pick. It's not like he's Slafovsky or Hischier.

Schaefer has Heiskanen caliber upside IMO, that's well worth a #1 pick.

If I'm Chicago I'm taking the best player regardless of position.

Targeting is unwise. Targeting is how our moron GM took Derek Pouliot instead of Filip Forsberg.

Was at the new Arena for that Draft and you could feel the air go out of the room when they called the pick.

Rarely have I seen someone snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at such a high level.

It was basically the moment this GIF was created for:

Yep. That clip about says it all. I was the only one in my row that knew who the player was...

The best pick the Penguins had during their entire window... and the clear and obvious choice was RIGHT there.

Never let anyone tell you that GMs, coaches, executives etc. are these infallible beings that levitate above the rest of us. They are quite often huge morons, too.
