Let's not act like they didn't face any discipline at all. The first penalty was over the top. This is much more appropriate considering the other ridiculous contracts out there and the fact that the arbitrator ruled that the Devils didn't act in bad faith.

That's a pretty big drop. Especially for a team that hasn't drafted well in the last decade.

The reversal is idiotic, but the punishment is fair.

The NHL and NHLPA agreed to the Kovalchuk amendment. It outlined how the NHL would deal with long-term contracts. The teams follow that agreement and then the NHL decides to punish those teams for following that agreement. The stupid NHLPA goes along with it. The Devils are founded to have circumvented the CBA and the NHL punishes them. Nearly 4 years later the NHL changes the penalty. Bettman was bailed out by Josh Harris because that team was having trouble finding a new owner. Harris was the night knight and Bettman gave his team a break. That's a joke. Who knows what Bettman told Lou about not giving up the pick in 2012. Very fishy. Other teams aren't happy.
