Scrivens has really shined every time he's been given a chance at the NHL level. With Quick, Scrivens and Jones (after swapping Bernier for Scrivens) LA has had an embarrassment of riches in net, so selling an unproven Scrivens for cheap can't really be criticized but... that trade is looking like it could really help Edmonton in a big way.

I like Scrivens. He always seems to be a really down to earth guy, and he can get pretty athletic in that crease.
Good for him. The Oilers fans need something to be excited about, and it sure as hell is not going to be Bryzgalov, long term.

Bishop is down! Somebody find that sniper! After further review looked like a skate or knee to the head. Initially it looked like a sniper, false alarm

Varlamov extension: 5 years, $29.5 million. An AAV of $5.9 M a year

That's a really good price for Varlamov, in my opinion. It's a good price today, under the current cap; it's an even better price each subsequent year as the cap continues to rise.

I've always thought he's a very good goalie. He's been great this year. 2.43 GAA isn't phenomenal, but his .925 sv% is great - the reason for a great save percentage and only a 'good' GAA is that Colorado's defense is heinously shallow and yields a ton of shots. Varly's stats are great considering who he has in front of him every night. Last year his numbers were fairly poor, but again, you have to look at who was in front of him; the defense was even worse last year and Colorado was rewarded for it with the #1 overall pick. When you keep the team in front of him in consideration, Varly has really been quite good.

So all of that considered, paying your starting goalie less than what Callahan is likely going to be earning next year is a pretty sweet deal for Colorado. Term isn't bad either; Varly is young enough that he shouldn't decline at all during this deal. Not in the same realm as Lundqvist, but makes me cringe a bit. I think Varly is going to be a top five goalie the next few years, especially if Colorado improves their D.
