Why are the Blues moving Shattenkirk? Is there really any fire there? So far I haven't seen any legit sources mentioning it, just a lot of HF trade proposals/discussions and Haggerty.

Shattenkirk was their best D before he got hurt last year, so it's not like he's in a change of scenery or core shakeup category like Backes or Berglund. I don't really get it.

Leafs sign Matthias to a one year contract for 2.3MM. I know the Pens don't have cap space at the moment, but I would have loved him for that price.

Hayes signs for a hair more than Matthias for 2 more seasons. As a fan of both players from their time in Florida, seems like their contracts would make more sense if you swapped them, not that either deal is terrible.

Leafs fans are ridiculous, how does Kapanen now turn into one of the best winger prospects in the last decade after joining them? Lmao.

I hope Tangradi can turn it around in Detroit, undo the mental damage done by Bylsma, but god forbid anyone ever mentions how psychological damage can affect someone's career or anything.

Because that totally never happens.

I remember there being such high hopes for ET. Sucks he never panned out.

Well for one, they tried to fit a square peg in a round hole and then anytime he did anything good in the NHL, he was demoted and his minutes cut (to nothing) from Bylsma.

Excellent asset management. But people here will swear on their lives that it wasn't the case and he's just terrible at hockey.

To be fair, Kapanen didn't turn into one of the best winger prospects in the last decade after joining the Leafs. He turned into one of the best winger prospects in the last decade after holding court for the Toronto media.

Tangradi as a Penguin is not on topic. Stay on topic.

See also: probably a good idea to do what we've been doing for many months – not talk about Tangradi. Unless you're going to do it in the context of where he'll fit on the Red Wings, etc. ;)

Shero fired David Conte (neglected to renew) today. Strikes me as foolish. Conte's record, particularly with undrafted and European players is far, far stronger than Shero's.

Probably mad they picked a non US born non D in round 1.

30 years is a long time, and it isn't as though Jersey's pipeline is all that deep or impressive right now. I think it was probably time.

*31 years.

Yeah, I actually agree with that sentiment. This is also very much Shero showing that he's not just a puppet of Lou's...for better or worse. Things grew stagnant in the swamp, things had to change and Conte's days as being one of the best scouting minds in hockey are well in the past given the results of the post-lockout Devils drafts.

I'll still always love him just for being the first guy to openly talk about how good Evgeni Malkin actually was. That meant something in 2004.

Conte was the one who was quoted nationally saying in their draft year that he would have drafted Malkin over Ovechkin if he had the chance.

I don't think he actually ever said that. He did say that Malkin was "no consolation prize" and pointed out he was a year younger than Ovechkin and therefore had more room to grow than Ovechkin did.

"He's an exceptional talent," Conte said of Malkin at the time. "And it's not unreasonable to think a guy who goes second could be better than the guy who goes first. The draft, you have to remember, is like going into the 10th grade and predicting who the best doctors will be."

He was more referring to the uncertain nature of drafting teenagers, but that became misquoted and oft-repeated into "David Conte says Malkin is better and would have taken him first."
