TSN: Around the NHL reaction to Yakupov's Goal

I'm surprised anybody is surprised at Don Cherry's dislike of the celebration. He's never liked that type of stuff. He will always say that the other team is going to remember it, and all it will do in the end is hurt your team.

That's Don Cherry. He's not going to change now.

Yeah I was expecting it, but are the Kings really going to remember this and make the Oilers their most hated team?

Trying to compare it to Fleury and the Oilers/Flames is stupid.

Cherry is just one of those guys who doesn't understand that hockey is an entertainment business. The game itself is sacrosanct, fans are privileged to be permitted the opportunity to watch it, and anyone who steps out of line to be unique is the enemy.

But he's a total antique by the game's standard, his whole rant about having goons on skill lines and his reminiscing about the days of Semenko shows just how much the game has passed him by.

I love Brownlee's twitter comment about Cherry LOL.

Yakupov (and Fleury) looked like "idiots" celebrating the way they did. So says Don Cherry, wearing a Christmas wrap jacket and clown collar

He was right about the Fleury celebration being a catalyst for a game 7 Oiler win though. I remember me and my brother watching that and having it stick in our craw i so I can imagine what the Oiler players thought of it at the time. I like Yaks celebration, but I hope he doesn't make a habit out of it.

As long as people like yourself are watching him and talking about him he is relevant.

Hardly. I heard him because he was there on hnic. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to him. Would I miss him if he wasn't there? Hell no. Think before you post.

This for me as well. He doesn't understand celebrations and emotions like this are good for the game. They show up highlight reels all over North America and help grow the game. It gets fans in the seats and out of their seats, if you know what I mean.

Whether you like you or not, you'll come to watch the game to cheer for or against players like Yakupov. And for the fact I am still hearing about it while watching the Flames-Oilers game means that it's a hot topic.

It's not like he did it in a 5-0 game or even breaking a 2-2 tie with 5 minutes left, he did it with 5 seconds left in the Oilers home arena, after they felt they were slighted with a disallowed goal.

I don't think you are getting it. Cherry is on HNIC because people watch and then talk about him. It does not matter if you'd miss him or not, you watched and now are discussing his comments. That is all that matters. There are more people that claim to not like him that endlessly discuss him that admit to being a fan.

That said, what are your issues with what he said about Nail? I think he was mostly right. As a FAN of the NHL, I don't really care about the celebration. It was at home, no big deal. But as a player, I (and at least 5 guys on my team) would being looking to put some hurt on some twit who pulled that. If you see Dustin Brown demolish Yak this year, you'll know why.

And I am surely not a fan of Cherry. I bet many of Cherry's haters love him though when he bashes Vancouver.

I think Cherry's career, post coaching, says he knows that hockey IS an entertainment business. It's all he has done, love him or hate him, for decades. Lots of people that hate and watch him are living proof.

Don Cherry knows he is the entertainment, he's the intermission entertainment after all. The game though? Every rant he does shows how important and serious he thinks hockey is.

But in fairness, he is old. There was a time hockey wasn't all entertainment, business, and lockouts, and he is from that era when hockey was also the cold war battlefield of democracy vs. communism.

He has a vastly different perspective of what hockey is to the world.

I cannot believe that there are people out there that believe Yakupov deliberately mocked Jonathan Quick

Racist against a country?

OP might have used the wrong word, but did you really not understand what he meant, or are you just trying to be a ******?

Don Cherry is a xenophobe and a bigot. I get a kick out of him calling people out for looking like "idiots" while he's wearing the most attention whoring garb known to man.

He's well past his best before date and has become nothing more than a caricature of himself.
