I'd love to know how Toronto thinks they can add Karlsson and make it work given their current cap situation.

They'd need 50% retention, and to move someone like Brodie and maybe Jarnkrok. Difficult, but not impossible.

It'd have to be a 3 team monstrosity. Maybe Nylander goes elsewhere, Brodie most certainly.

Hell, Nylander and Brodie for Karlsson actually saves them cap this year. Of course, it makes things hellaciously challenging for them after this year........

They are not getting 50% retention for 4 years.

Both Nylander and Brodie have 10 team No-Trade lists. That makes things even tougher.

I simply stated how it could work, not the plausibility of it actually happening.

The only other way I could see them managing it would be to trade one of the other big contracts which seems unlikely.
If they are talking to Karlsson, I would expect that they have a somewhat plausible plan to make things work and not some pie in the sky dream of how it couple work out.

There is also a story of Wayne - still in Edmonton - saying that Bert needed to be at the ASG. He was a fan.
Looking back on it, Bert was a unique player with a unique set of skills that will likely never be replicated.

My high school buddy back in the 70's drew a characterization of Gil. He had Gil holding a hockey stick with a small chain attached to it and the puck.

Once Bert had the puck, no one was taking it away from him. Opponents would back off and just try to shadow him.

There's no stat for this but I'm certain no one has ever displayed and completed (sucessfully) more end to end rushes than Gil.

The game was just played differently back then and he was a perfect fit for it. Today, he'd be told he's a hot dog and a selfish player....

Watching highlights of his rush's and weaves through opponents still brings a tear to my eye.......

You are bang on! Everyone in the arena would tense up when Gil had the puck behind his net and started down the ice! Fans leaned forward in their seats and the opposition players scurried to find better defensive positions-everyone was afraid to forecheck for fear of looking foolish. Seeing him carry the puck from his end several times a game was in itself worth the price of admission.

What if Matthews goes full heel and signs as an UFA with BUF. Could you imagine the howling from the great white north?
