Of the buyout guys, Blake Wheeler on a 1 year deal is the only one that kind of interests me.
I think he has a questionable personality, we don't need this to be in the Buffalo locker room.

I’ve been wondering this myself. Do we see some good, borderline bargain, deals a week or so after free agancy starts? Not specific to us but league wide

Maybe the best July 1 signings are on July 7 or later. That will cause a lot of anger around here but Keyvn seems like the type to sit and wait to see how things shake out - and this seems like a summer to be patient.

The one drawback is that players might be more likely to take the money now and resign instead of walking a year to UFA and be counting on this theoretical cap increase. That might make guys like Pence and others resign at a more manageable deal. At the same time, sounds like Hanifin wants out no matter what, so that might make a sign and trade a bit cheaper for us.

Free Agency 2023 is looking as intriguing as Draft 2023.

I'm wondering if this actually bodes well for the Sabres to fill Quinn's spot with a 1 year FA signing. Maybe a player takes a one year deal betting on the cap going up next year and they get to test drive the vibes in Buffalo...just a thought...

I don't really think they need to fill his spot externally. There are young guys competing in camp, knocking at the door. I'm not against it, though. If Jost doesn't re-sign then they ought to add a forward.

Surprising that Detroit bought out Yamamoto. So basically they took him on with the intention to buy him out for Kostin? Hardly seems worth it for a 24 year old RFA who doesn't play any special teams and has mostly been a 4th line grinder.
Until the deadline when those guys are worth hilarious assets from contenders.

Using cash and cap space to buy futures is a thing other teams do. With other owners.

Those young guys could use more seasoning and will need to earn it in training camp which happens after free agency. Trade VO and bring in a different skill set...Miles Wood maybe? Rousek may get first shot...

Every show I’ve listened to is people talking about how surprising the lack of trades is. Is it?

The good teams have no money and the teams with money are on all he no trade lists every player is given like candy. A confluence of perfect NHL quality management from all ends.

Could bode well for us. Our position as an obvious rising team, not being in Canada and having money to sign an extension could place us in the most advantageous position we’ve been in for decades on acquiring a player. But will we take advantage of it?

I bring it up because on the 32 Thoughts podcast Friedman said the problem for Carolina with Pesce is he has a 15 team no trade and sounds willing to play out the year there

Heard that as well, maybe someone can get in his ear about Buffalo. But I certainly wouldn’t blame him for not wanting to go to a worse team, higher taxes, harder division and the Sabres are still a bit of an unknown.

Making the playoffs definitely isn’t a sure thing.

That last part is interesting because CapFriendly does not list a NTC for Pesce.

All true. But if I was an agent and Buffalo was interested in my player I’d tell him the truth. No one has money who is any good. They’re getting good and have money. More importantly…they’re set up to stay good for the rest of your career. Take quick bucks somewhere like Pitt at your own risk.
