I think Dubas was counting on the Barrie that was playing under Keefe, not under Babcock. If we got that for an entire year, people would be saying different things (he would have finished with something like 55-60 points based on what he was pacing under Keefe), and I think Dubas somewhat hinted at that with his "we did not do a good job accommodating him when he first arrived" comment.
I think the other thing people need to realize is that the market for Kadri may not have been as great as people expected. We know Brodie and we know of Barrie, but it is not like it is known we turned down a deal for Pesce or something. Maybe Barrie or Brodie was the best defenseman Kadri was going to get unless we just took pure futures, and let's also not forget that Kerfoot does have a fair amount of value himself right now. A mid-20's 3C who can play a solid two-way game has a good amount of value.
One thing we do likely know is that if Kadri had another year like 2018-2019, he would not have even been able to return what he did. Maybe it was selling low for a little bit last year, and it would have been better to sell him right after we got Tavares, but it was also a lot harder to justify it and we would be selling even lower this year.
All-in-all, I laughed when Hayes said it may be one of the worst trades in Leafs history. It doesn't surprise me, because of what he says and who he pretends to be, but I still laughed.
So why was Barrie demoted to the bottom pair under Keefe?
