I’m out of the loop. What did they do?
Many parts to this long winded answer. Open a beer...
During the season ticket drive to prove to the NHL that there was a viable market in Vegas, we all put down deposits 3 years before the team was even granted. Not a ton of money, but it was a blind faith leap by many to basically let them sit on your cash for awhile.
When the team was finally officially announced the team had an open house event at the arena in Feb 2017 for you to view your seats & give you the opportunity to upgrade your seats or increase your package from a partial plan to a full plan. As a partial plan depositor I met my rep for the first time & he asked why I wasn't interested in a full season. I let him know my work schedule wasn't conducive to attending more than 7-10 games. Right away he went on the hard sell of being able to unload the rest of my games with all the tourists who were going to come to town to see their team play. Now mind you he was right, but this was a full 8 months before the first season, & everyone was predicting the team to suck. At the time I wasn't interested in being a ticket broker, but I bought into the fact I could choose better seats upgrading to a full season & lower my per game cost significantly. What he neglected to tell me is that the tickets would be digital only & they had no partnership with a resale platform til less than 2 weeks before the season started. Plus they didn't release our seats to us til 3 days before the first exhibition home game. That was the first bad sign.
Fast forward 16 months & the the team is in the Finals, and both regular season & playoff tickets have been selling like mad, but Mr Billionaire owner doesn't like the fact that his customers who put deposits down 4 years ago are now making significant money selling playoff seats. So for the SCFs, the team & Stubhub (who is the only approved outlet we can resell our tickets through) decide to f*** us by not releasing our seats til 3 days before game 1, while the team itself listed a ton of their own inventory on Stubhub 8 days before Game 1 to give us less opportunity to profit.
Then after the Finals, the team began revoking STHs seats because of excess selling of their seats. Remember all the tickets are digital so they can track every seat you use, give away or sell on Stubhub. This was after their reps were selling ticket packages with the sales pitch of how easy it was to sell your extras. And they were pulling peoples accounts completely arbitrarily...no rhyme or reason. I was shocked they didn't yank mine after attending only 10 regular season games & 4 playoff games.
Then the price increases came. My seats in year one were $50 each for 5th row upper level between the blue line & the face off circle. $4400 for year one which included 3 preseaon games at full price. For year 2, that cost was increased to $6750, which didn't include a $3 per seat per game arena improvement fee....on a f***ing 2 year old building. That fee never went away. For year 3 my seats went to $8400 for the year for the pair plus the AMF $3 fee per seat per game....Then if I wanted to renew for year four, the cost was $10,200 plus the AMF fee. After year 3 I impolitely declined. All my friends in Vegas who kept their seats are getting killed on resales when they can't go to a game. The resale market is so flooded, sometimes they have to eat their extras.
During year 3, Covid hit, & luckily I wasn't paying for year 4, which the payment plan would begin in January. Not only did Foley not give anyone the option to opt out of the following season, he was the last owner to refund money for games unplayed in the 19-20 season. And if you had renewed for the 20-21 year, they kept your money & applied to your balance, knowing full well they had no idea when fans would be let back in the building...which took almost a full calendar year.
Now you gotta remember, Vegas isn't like NYC, many of the STHs are service industry employees who make very good money bartending, cocktail waitressing etc. But the Vegas Strip was shut down for 4 months for Covid initially & then shut down again....a lot of people were hurting for cash & that prick was so unsympathetic. Plus he laid off his entire game day ice staff
without pay when other teams were keeping them on full time.
I know there's more I neglecting to add, but I think you get the point.
TL/DR f*** Bill Foley.
