Can somebody help teach me how to read the 'Series Spread'

They'll be four options for each team, using Rangers/Pens for ex:

Rangers -2.5games
Rangers -1.5 games
Rangers +1.5 games
Rangers +2.5 games

I have been trying to figure this out for way to long and I just have to give up. Anybody know what each of these options is telling me?
