Montreal got an albatross of a contract in Scott Gomez for McDonagh. We got a late first round pick for him.

What goes around, I suppose
If that's what we could get, that's what you take. We wouldn't be good for those years with McDonagh anyways, and I don't think the years 33-37 will be good to him.

They've played inside of the rules. It's a major loophole that can be abused. You can't really blame the org for using it

The Playoffs needs a cap. That's it. LTIR can still offer cap relief. If that player is no longer injured, the team needs to be cap compliant.
The Devils also played “inside the rules” when they gave Kovalchuk that 17 year deal. And this whole thing with them being smart for using the loophole is getting old. They were in a tough spot because no one wanted to help them out with any contracts, Kucherov probably had a nagging injury so they opted for surgery to get themselves out of the bind. It was a calculated move to circumvent the cap because they know they wouldn’t have to worry about it for the playoffs. So this team that purposely got around the salary cap is now hoisting the Stanley Cup. Can never get behind Tampa Bay ever for their shenanigans. You guys can all kiss their butt until eternity but karma will get them one day.

Didn't we all say at the same that we got pennies on the dollar for him? It was an atrocious trade then and it's an even worse trade considering now what McDonagh has gone on to and the fact that we've actually seen Libor Hajek and Brett Howden "play".

It was a forced trade that happened at the last minute and Gorton took the bare minimum...but yet, he chose to extend the likes of Tony DeAngelo and Chris Kreider instead of trading them.

Bravo, Jeff.

And the Devils were punished for it. But the NHL managed to even screw that up by later on easing the punishment after Kovalchuk had "retired", and he didn't even really retire because he came back to play for LA.

Tampa can continue to circumvent the cap for all I care if it means breaking the hearts of Piles fans all over again next year. Could've been watching Matt Martin lift the f***ing cup right now

By the time the Rangers are competitive again the loophole will be long closed and the Islanders will be back to doing what they do best - sucking ass.

Players on LTIR for cap relief need to be ineligible for the remainder of the season. Hard cap during the playoffs. Next stupid question.

Not sure why you thought it was a stupid question.
It seems harsh to me that someone injured 4 weeks out from the playoffs would be forced to miss after playing 3/4 of a season, that's why I asked
