These conversations go nowhere because the counter factuals can’t be checked/challenged. I feel very lucky to have first hand witnessed the peak of the NHL (early to mid nineties). I got to watch Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Lindros, Bure, Fedorov, etc. in their primes.
McDavid is easily the most impressive offensive player I have ever seen. There is zero doubt in my mind that if you dropped him into the 1980s NHL he tears it apart at a rate equal to, or better than, Gretzky. His speed, strength, shot, balance, skating, etc. is basically a combination of the best attributes from all of the HOFers mentioned above. He is an absurd offensive hockey player.
