Leipsic would have been paid all the money from his contract already, right? This is probably a mutual termination?

Leipsic would be a good replacement for Fast. Speedy depth player with some skill who is surprisingly physical and could play up in the lineup as needed.

Leipsic is done for now anyway. He put the Caps in a situation. His gripe against Dowd and Hathaway might be part of not being an everyday player as Caps were going with 13/14 forwards and Leipsic was one of 4 or 5 4th liners for them. All that 'might not' be well received in their locker room but his remarks about Wilson's girlfriend--Wilson's a big part of their team and that's the real killer here. Leipsic isn't really a hard player to replace and he crossed a line with his team right there.

It also shows him to be a shit teammate or at least someone in need of remediation. I don't think there are going to be many teams interested in his services for a while. Is it altogether fair to have your shit hacked and put in public? Probably not--but not much excuse for his stupidity and misogyny either. The truth seems to be he's a social jerk and hey I I'd rather keep social jerks away from my team

Will the Maple Leafs terminate Auston Matthews' contract for stripping naked in front of a woman, grabbing his ass after trying to break into her car?

Or is contract termination only warranted when it's a depth player?

Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews Facing Serious Legal Issues Following Criminal Charge

The Leafs aren't going to do that.....no. And if they did do it you know as well as I that just about every other NHL team would be out to sign him. That said it's a serious black eye for the Leafs and the NHL and IMO the NHL should think about hitting Matthews with anywhere between a 20 game to half season suspension--something that would put players on notice that this kind of behavior is unacceptable.

Not many people in the sport are terribly surprised by the Matthews' allegation.

Basic idea is that he's a good kid, but needs to learn moderation a bit more.

Leipsic should have been a better player, he’d still be in the league if he was.

Leipsic has a lot of the trappings of a guy who people think "should" be better, but really was more of a mirage than anything else.

We love the plucky undersized guys who have jam to their game and put up points. You can almost write a template for someone like Leipsic.

About 5'10-5'11, 180-190lbs

Big climb in his D+1 season after being a second or third round pick

From the WHL where they still play a little bit of cowboy hockey. Racks up 100+ pim to go with the offensive numbers.

Fits in that "could be a top six player if all the pieces come together" catch-all.

But then they turn pro, and you realize the offense, the jam, and other attributes aren't quite up to snuff when the opponents are bigger, faster, stronger and tougher.

The reality is that even before his happened, Leipsic was entering the stage of his career where the competition for his spot in the NHL was going to be younger, cheaper, and still possessing the possibility of "putting the pieces together."

Not to defend Leipsic because the stuff he said was both stupid and gross, but I do feel sort of bad for him. Those were supposed to be private conversations. I bet 90% of guys in the NHL have private conversations verbally just like that all the time. Unfortunately, Leipsic was stupid to put them in writing and they ended up leaking. I understand why Washington has to get rid of him, but I hope it doesn't totally torpedo his career, because again, I honestly don't believe he said anything your average athlete hasn't/doesn't/won't say. Though, he could probably kill it somewhere in Europe. I have no doubt he could be some tough, 30+ point-guy in the KHL for the next decade and make good money.

(If he has done some other other gross things that I'm unaware of, forgive me.)

Also, why did his brother get cut from the USports team? Was he involved in the messages? Maybe I didn't see them all.

The article quoted is from last September referring to an incident from last May. It’s been a full year since.

I'm in the same boat somewhat. I don't feel bad that he had his contract terminated in the slightest (though as someone said, it was probably mutual as he can now get a fresh start elsewhere and his free agent status changes from RFA to UFA) because he seems like an asshole but they were private conversations that only got out because someone's phone apparently got hacked. Like you said, I think you'd see this from the majority of players in the NHL and I'd venture to say those are in writing too. It's just Leipsic had his spill out through something like this.

Again, he deserves it so I don't feel too bad for him but I was worried about the precedent it may set for the future. I'm glad the team cut him because I don't think I would have liked the league to come down with a suspension for private conversations that got out through a hacker.
