That's why I can't take Toronto seriously in the playoffs, if they even make the playoffs this year. I thought Shanahan was supposed to be some front office genius with his "Shanaplan." Something's wrong when you basically have 4 PPG (or near that) forwards but you're in danger of missing the playoffs. Toronto's most experienced defenseman under contract for next season is Marincin...

Rumblings out of Montreal this morning is that Price could be traded sooner rather than later, ie possibly by Monday...Bergevin has been in Colorado the past 3 days and there is speculation Price has been discussed. Montreal traded Roy to Colorado many years ago, could it happen again??

They have to retain on the contract. No other way to make it worthwhile. $10.5m cap hit is going to kill that Colorado team

I don’t see it happening. Is it possible for a team to retain more than 50%? Lmao. And unlike Lundqvist, Price still has like 6 years in his deal. Also, Hank is BETTER than Price AINEC

adding Tavres was supposed to be the glue and missing piece IMO. Appears to have backfired as that’s a lot of cash and the team still can’t appear to pull it all together.

If there was ever an untradeable contract... I would definitely say Price is it. 6 more years. Huge signing bonuses. Takes the guy into his late 30's. Unless the Habs are going full on tear-down mode, I can't envision them retaining enough money for that long to make it palatable for Colorado.

Now that would be pretty freakin wild if deja vous happened all over again. I’m starting to sound like Yogi...lol

This board lauding JT Miller as a stud while at the same time dismissing Strome as a guy propped up by elite line mates is just hilarious to me.

Personally I think they're both very good players. We'll see if Miller can replicate what he's doing next year--I'm not sure he will but he's got real skills and a big body--kind of Jamie Benn like. He never quite put it all together for us and Tampa got frustrated with him too but this is his year.

Strome's over 50 points. He's a decent bet to end with around 70. I don't care what people say--that's a f***ing good year. Beginning of the year I would have been alright with 40-45. He works well with Panarin and he's been a decent penalty killer. Here's the other thing I wasn't keen on Zibanejad and Panarin together--they're fine together out on the power play but I wanted to see both on separate lines because I think both can carry a line and to me better having two dangerous scoring lines than one. Having Strome with Panarin has helped solve that issue. Strome has good offensive instincts and Panarin brings the best of that out of him.

Difference is Miller actually has more points than his elite linemates though.

Agreed. I think defense is part of it, and I get the whole coaches can teach defense approach. All of this is accurate.

But when I look at Toronto, one thing becomes immediately apparent --- I don't see a well-constructed team.

And at the end of the day, you need to have a team that strives for some degree of balance, with different players filling different roles, understanding those roles, and going out and executing a game plan.

Toronto, in many ways, suffers from the same problem Tampa has faced --- they produce wonderful stats, everyone gushes over what the elite skill "can do" to create highlight reel material, but once you figure them out, and really push them, they don't have that extra something.

Tampa Bay looks to me like they have figured it out now as they look extremely balanced with a great mix of elite skilled players(Kuch,Point, Stamkos) secondary scoring(Palat, Kilhorn,Cirelli), grinder greasy mucker types who know their role(Maroon,Gourde,Paquette), 3 top notch D pairs led by Hedman and Segachev but with the Shattenkirks making big time contributions.

Oh and it helps to have the best goalie on the planet in Vaselevsky

Toronto is total opposite of Tampa and I’d argue Tampa had always had it, they just have had it so easy over the years, they never had to be pushed.

This year tho after last years playoff disaster, it’s as if they needed to put themselves in a hole before they got their shit together and man oh man have they put it together.

I’d be really surprised if they don’t emerge from the East as the Lightning should meet the Caps, Bruins, Pens or whoever it is survives to meet them in the in the ECF.

Going to be a fascinating to see how they fair this time...I’m betting they are winning the Cup this year but still a long way to go.

And it only took him getting traded twice to figure it out

And playing with a guy who is arguably looking like one of the elite NHL centers of the 2020s.

I suspect his number would look somewhat similar on this squad as well --- and we'd probably be debating him like Ryan Strome.

This is at 6:50PM yesterday under the Isles' thread:

"I hope Panarin enjoys the Rangers rebuild while watching Cup hockey from his couch."

The context was everybody deciding which contract they'd rather be saddled with, Panarin, Tavares, or Lee.

If the Isles can't figure out a way to occasionally put the puck in the net, Lee is going to be asking Panarin to pass the popcorn.

I got blasted on the main boards a couple months ago for saying the Penguins are the better defensive team.
Well, that's because the Isles' fanbase collectively has 7 brain cells. The Penguins are an incredible defensive team and they literally can throw any random player into their system and make them fit their structure. The Isles just trap and hope their goalie can bail their asses out every night.

Outside of the Rangers jumping into those spots, I'll feel pretty satisfied if the following teams get the top 3 picks:

Detroit: Good for so long and tried to keep it going, but this is part of the natural cycle, and they are really bad and could use it.
Anaheim: See Detroit, just not sustained as long. Successful team that is hurting on the backend of their long term deals.
Ottawa: Their fans get f*cked all the time and honestly their team seems to play really hard in spite of the talent. Forced to always move their good players. Fans deserve better, owner is a douche though.
Minnesota: Stuck in mediocrity and never have a superstar type player. Should be punished for Parise and Suter deals, but they are the lesser of a lot of the evils down at the bottom of the standings.

LA (can suffer forever), Buffalo, NJ, Montreal, Chicago. No thank you. Chicago moved up last year and tanked forever for 3 cups. NJ is NJ and can rot. Buffalo is such a failed team that they shouldn't be rewarded for it. Montreal because is LaFreniere ends up there, we'll never hear the end of it. LA has one of the best prospect pools and they should suck for even longer.

Minnesota is probably the worst run franchise in the last 10 years. Eternal mediocrity.

Regarding the lottery... I suggested a system a few years ago where the lottery winners are exempt in future drafts.

1st overall: Exempt for 3 years
2nd overall: Exempt for 2 years
3rd overall: Exempt for 1 year

If those teams were to win the draft lottery, they can't move up any higher than 4th. This was you avoid a situation like the Oilers in the early 2010s, or the Devils in recent years. It would discourage tanking even more

The Rangers goal differential right now is better than or equal to every team in the Western Conference except for the Avs and Blues. Pretty ridiculous stat right there. I know goal differential on its own doesn't mean much, but it's definitely odd.

Yes, and only one team in the west, Colorado, has more regulation wins than the Rangers.
