Gardiner and Werenski both make less than Skjei now.

That contract is low-key really bad.
I still don’t think it was really bad. I’m not gonna argue about how I feel about Gardiner ( I think for what he got it’s fair). Werenski is a very good young dman but he didn’t get much term. I’m sure in 3 years when his deal is up he will be easily getting 7 plus million.
Skjei will only be what 29 or 30 when his deal is up? Let’s see how he plays with a decent d partner in Trouba this season. The only meaningful playoff hockey he played he was beyond terrific. The 2017 playoffs he played some of the best two way dman hockey I’ve seen from a Ranger in a very long time.
If worst comes to worst and goes downhill and sucks we have a decent pipeline of young LHD who hopefully will be ready to crack the lineup in 2 years.

Gardiner was clearly not in the highest demand.

Because this league is filled with morons.
I also believe it was reported that Gardiner was holding out for TOR to make room for him/work with him on fitting him in.

So it's not entirely like that he was just sitting there waiting for a team to call. He could have had offers on the table from the beginning and just told them that he'd be holding off on making a decision until later.

I mean he must REALLY like Toronto then.

Really low-key

Its overpayment, but its not terribly prohibitive. The guy is probably overpaid by about 1.5M. by the time our LD prospects come off their ELCs, Skjei's will be 28-29, contract will be expiring, and a lower percentage of the cap. He will be movable. Only has a modified NTC (10 team no trade list) starting in 2021.

Its not a good contract, but its not Staal or Girardi.

Lets cross the bridge when we come to it, if we ever do.

It was in line with Pesce, Hanifin, and Severson contracts... can't bitch it is a bad contract when its literally market value

I'm still not understanding how that's necessarily legal, and if it is, I'm surprised more teams don't do this as an alternative way to find cap space. Stone now has a total cap hit ~$1.9M for CGY this season and $1.17M next year as the buyout cost. He was originally slated to be due $3.5M this year. The Flames still need space to sign Tkachuk, but this at least helps a little bit.

we overpaid skjei because we overpaid him for skills that he doesn’t have. pretty brain dead player that’s very limited with what he can do. i honestly think he has no value to this team going forward

Why do you say that?

His track record is pretty underwhelming to say the least.

I don't know, being able to barely get one cup out of Crosby and Malkins best years doesn't really speak too highly of his abilities as a GM. Rutherford won 2 with lesser versions of those guys and hes far from a genius.

I'd have to look up his track record during Pittsburgh. Hard to judge how well he's done with New Jersey considering the cosmically unfair luck they always seem to stumble upon. Definitely seems dopy, though.
