You got perspectives of few of us that understand and accept where Potvin Sucks and Dancing Larry come from. Possibly you will get there too in a few more years.
I don't really understand what you're trying to say here. Potvin Sucks had relevance in the past. It no longer does. That's my point. Dancing Larry is just an embarrassment. Both 'traditions' in my opinion are way past their due dates. Some traditions are better left to expire than continue.
Do over your math. I said I was 61. I was born in September 1957. Fact is I have an idea one of the things my mom and dad were up to on Christmas day in 1956. So I got to see plenty of Denis Potvin.
MSG is celebrity happy and kowtows to corporations--that's really not news. The Potvin sucks people--some of them anyway are long time Rangers fans so I'm not sure what they have to do with the celebrities and corporations. I don't live in New York either---I'm about 5 hours away--I was in the Coast Guard on Governor's Island for 3 years in the 80's if that counts for anything but really I don't get to see the Rangers at MSG very often but when I do I really look forward to it. Still I've been following the Rangers for quite a while--this year will be my 48th season. I'm sure I will follow them until I did and if something were to happen to them I would not follow another team.....I would give it all up.
By the way I think there should be limits on personal wealth. There's no good reason for anyone to be a billionaire.
I'm also a little confused by your post. I hope you were not under the impression that I was criticizing your personal fandom. I completely respect that and your opinion.
In response, you are basically confirming my point that the Potvin Sucks chant is outdated when you explain that you are 61 and remember Potvin clearly. Combining the fact that many attendees are tourists or 'casual' fans, along with Potvin's playing career being more than 30 years ago, you have few that comprehend what that chant means in its full context. I would rather move to an 'Islanders Suck' chant after the whistle. Or there could be something targeting each team. So for example when Pitts visits the chant is 'Crosby Sucks.'
I agree with your personal wealth comment, but that's neither here nor there. I'll just add, one of the big reasons my fandom waned over the years is because after being a ticket holder for 10+ years, the way the Rangers treated me in favor of raising prices, preferring to sell my tickets to those who could more easily pay, was despicable. Especially when I would compare what other teams were doing for their ticket holders. It killed the atmosphere in the arena and left a lot of long-time diehards feeling shitty.
I purposefully left this opinion out of it, because I didn't feel it was relevant to the convo. The Rangers have prioritized the wealthy over the 'true' fans. Of course, I'm not in support of that. But there's little I can do and I've come to accept it.
It was some kind of moral reckoning when I gave up my tickets. And I was thinking the other day I haven't been to a game in over 2 years. It's hard to believe and leaves me feeling a little depressed. But time heals and frankly, it was probably unhealthy how obsessed I was with a sports team anyway. I've now filled that time with other interests and hobbies.
