Maple leafs are gonna be taking a step back this year...they lost marleau and Gardiner ..are about to pay marner a fortune to lock him up and their prospects aren't exactly amazing.

A mediocre defense is probably going to be truly awful next year.

I wonder if they are going to get leap frogged by Florida if they can add panarin and bobrovsky.

If you think about it, Florida has nearly the star power that the leafs do as well...they just got awful goaltending all year long.
Ya I would watch out for Montreal too man tbh. I could easily see them having a nice year next year.

You got perspectives of few of us that understand and accept where Potvin Sucks and Dancing Larry come from. Possibly you will get there too in a few more years.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say here. Potvin Sucks had relevance in the past. It no longer does. That's my point. Dancing Larry is just an embarrassment. Both 'traditions' in my opinion are way past their due dates. Some traditions are better left to expire than continue.

Do over your math. I said I was 61. I was born in September 1957. Fact is I have an idea one of the things my mom and dad were up to on Christmas day in 1956. So I got to see plenty of Denis Potvin.

MSG is celebrity happy and kowtows to corporations--that's really not news. The Potvin sucks people--some of them anyway are long time Rangers fans so I'm not sure what they have to do with the celebrities and corporations. I don't live in New York either---I'm about 5 hours away--I was in the Coast Guard on Governor's Island for 3 years in the 80's if that counts for anything but really I don't get to see the Rangers at MSG very often but when I do I really look forward to it. Still I've been following the Rangers for quite a while--this year will be my 48th season. I'm sure I will follow them until I did and if something were to happen to them I would not follow another team.....I would give it all up.

By the way I think there should be limits on personal wealth. There's no good reason for anyone to be a billionaire.

I'm also a little confused by your post. I hope you were not under the impression that I was criticizing your personal fandom. I completely respect that and your opinion.

In response, you are basically confirming my point that the Potvin Sucks chant is outdated when you explain that you are 61 and remember Potvin clearly. Combining the fact that many attendees are tourists or 'casual' fans, along with Potvin's playing career being more than 30 years ago, you have few that comprehend what that chant means in its full context. I would rather move to an 'Islanders Suck' chant after the whistle. Or there could be something targeting each team. So for example when Pitts visits the chant is 'Crosby Sucks.'

I agree with your personal wealth comment, but that's neither here nor there. I'll just add, one of the big reasons my fandom waned over the years is because after being a ticket holder for 10+ years, the way the Rangers treated me in favor of raising prices, preferring to sell my tickets to those who could more easily pay, was despicable. Especially when I would compare what other teams were doing for their ticket holders. It killed the atmosphere in the arena and left a lot of long-time diehards feeling shitty.

I purposefully left this opinion out of it, because I didn't feel it was relevant to the convo. The Rangers have prioritized the wealthy over the 'true' fans. Of course, I'm not in support of that. But there's little I can do and I've come to accept it.

It was some kind of moral reckoning when I gave up my tickets. And I was thinking the other day I haven't been to a game in over 2 years. It's hard to believe and leaves me feeling a little depressed. But time heals and frankly, it was probably unhealthy how obsessed I was with a sports team anyway. I've now filled that time with other interests and hobbies.

The Leafs are going to have to move someone significant without taking salary back. I know Zaitsev is on the block but his $4.5 mil salary going away would only give them $10 mil to work with and that might not be enough to get Marner to sign. Kadri's on the block too--that would make things work but that's even more depth gone.

If the Panthers sign both Bobrowsky and Panarin they're going to have some issues too. Currently they have 8 forwards, 5 defensemen and James Reimer in goal signed. They will try to dump Reimer's $3.4 mil but that cap hit will be about what they have to work with to fill out their roster. Anyway Reimer sucks and to move him I think they're going to have to move a very good young prospect or at the least a 2nd rd. pick. Getting Bobrowsky and Panarin I wouldn't be surprised if they also try moving Hoffman to get a bit more cap space to work with.

reports are that Bobrovsky will be signing with Flordia and the Reimer trade and Darling buyout seem to confirm this. I can't see them trading away Reimer without knowing 100% that they were getting their guy.

@Ola , I can’t believe Chaika got praised for the price he paid for Kessel. Compare to NJ who received an impactful RD (compared to impactful W) with somewhat less outside of ice issues.

I can't either and though I think they'll seriously go after Panarin--they need a goalie a lot more than another scoring forward.

I feel a lot better about the Panarin decision making process with JD here. JD knows exactly what Panarin is.

Woof, initial reaction: Sakic overpaid for Kadri. Not sure Rosen will deliver and he's already 25. Can't believe Sakic got so little for Barrie @ 50% retained. I guess Kadri and a 3rd is good. So maybe I think Kerfoot and a 6th for Rosen is a bad deal? Oh well, GMJoe is still in the black for his Duchene for Byram, Giraud, Hammond, 2nd, 3rd trade.

So basically just enough room to sign Marner. Good job by Dubas getting out of cap hell, only real cost was the late 1st to move Marleau. If Barrie re-signs and Marner signs for ~$11m, this off-season was a home run for them.

barrie is under contract this year...so its just marner left to sign. if those numbers are right they got everyone signed and made the defense better...

next offseason will be interesting again for them though as Morgan Rielly is the only blueliner signed beyond this year...I'm sure they will be banking on sandin & Liljegren making it on their ELC
