Hags totally fixed their PK when he came over. No surprise. Wish we still had him but the $4M AAV he was asking for and got in Anaheim was too much. As a top tier 4th liner (seems so silly typing that phrase) even $2.75M AAV is a bit high but I guess that's the price for what he provides. I could see the Rangers using a player like Hagelin on their 4th but in the $2M-2.5M range. I doubt Tanev signs at such a low number but he's one player I think would help us in that role. A shame we don't have anyone in Hartford who has the top PK, grinding, forecheck, speed, energy, toughness package. Hagelin's portfolio is more PK, forecheck, speed.

I like Carl Hagelin a lot but IMO that's not a great contract for the Caps--his offensive production is getting iffier and iffier and he's kind of becoming a 4th liner penalty killing specialist and 4 years and he's already 30 years old. I would have been okay to take him back as a Ranger for $1.8 per for two years---but more than that?--no.

San Jose is going to be really shitty in 3/4 years. Too many old guys--not enough young guys--not enough prospects coming and they're the last team to pick in this year's draft at 81. They don't have their 1st next year either. It's already gone.

Yeah but with the salary cap increases $1.8 is more like $2m, no? Budget wise is a good approach though

Thing is, $2.75MM AAV is equivalent to a $2MM AAV only like 4 years ago.

Agreed that the Rangers have no need of him, and definitely not at that term, but I don't think the dollars are unreasonable.

Sounds like a team we knew all too well just a few years ago.

We pushed all of our chips into the middle AND emptied out our 1st round picks.

They are going to have to hopefully get lucky and make the right moves at the right time when they need to transition into a rebuild otherwise it will be a disastrous next decade for them.

Of course if they win a cup in the next 3-4 years then its worth it.

Do they have some sort of time machine they are working on?

I think I'm the only one who feels Rangers should stay away from Trouba and Panarin at this time.

Not at all. I'm on the same band wagon. Stay the course, no buyouts, dont empty the cupboard that we are still creating, and grow our own top talent.

Cup winners for multiple years all have their own home top talent.

Not so sure about the buyouts....I don't see Shatt (and maybe Smith) staying beyond this season (if he lasts that long) and I don't see anyone trading for him. You can probably get a pick for Smith.

With Panarin I think it's about the approximate percentages are probably 53 to 47 in favor of signing Panarin. So it's reasonably close.

Not sure what the percentages on here would be concerning Trouba.

If we are gonna pay big money for a free agent, said person should be a great leader for our young players.

Bread would make sense for our russians, but would the price be to high? and does he have the right personality? the whole "pay me stupid much or i walk" is not what we want Buch, Kravstov, Rykov and Shestyorkin to adapt.

Honestly i would prefer not grabbing any "elite FAs" and instead focusing on trading for more picks.

Glad Rangers stayed away from this, and I honestly feel they should be staying away from Panarin and Trouba. They are not ready to make a big splash. Develop the young guys and then maybe in a year or two.

What was there to stay away from?---San Jose didn't let him get to free agency. But yeah--glad we didn't do that. Panarin OTOH--we should be in on him.

I'm talking about the potential if he had hit Free Agency and sign him to a ridiculous contract. I'm still on the fence with Panarin. Really depends on the amount of course.

Agree re: Karlsson.

Panarin, I'm torn on: there are good arguments on both sides. 60/40, don't sign.

Trouba, I disagree. He turns 26 NEXT February, one month earlier than Skjei. There are absoclutely certain pieces that need to be off-limits in trying to acquire him, but in the right deal (e.g. Skjei + ADA for Trouba), he absolutely makes sense. It's not jumping the gun on the rebuild, it's simply reallocating the assets to be used in the rebuild.
