Couple things......for this trade to work for Carolina at all they pretty much need to re-sign Rantanen and Rantanen will have the leverage if he wants to use it. Already making $9.25 mil. 8 years at $11?-$12?

Signed for next year then would be:
Rantanen at $11 or $12
Aho-$9.75 mil
Svechnikov $7.75 mil
Jarvis $7.42 mil
Slavin $6.396 mil
Kotkaniemi $4.82 mil
Walker $3.6 mil
Gostisbehere $3.2 mil
Martinook $3.05 mil
Chatfield $3 mil.
Staal $2.9 mil
Kochetkov $2 mil
Carrier $2 mil
Blake 908K

13 guys and about $68-69 mil.

With the cap likely in the low to mid 90's I think they could make that work but they're in a spot where they'll have to be careful about adding more big $ players. Of course there's always dumpster diving. From a Vancouver/Rangers?/JT Miller perspective this might take them out of the running but maybe they'll still try anyway. The way Carolina is now put together is kind of like the Maple Leafs. Top heavy with stud forwards---not so much on the D and going cheap on the G. So those are areas they'll have to try to build back up.

11-12 is low.

Apparently he’s asking for 14.

Slavin Ghost Walker Chatfield for 16mm is tidy, with their young guys coming up in Nikishin and Morrow. No game breaker yet but it's a solid group to build on.

We're in for 10.7 just between fox and Schneider...

Rumor is he wants $14 a year like Leo D.

Mikko might get close to that. I think the Canes pretty much need to go all out or they're losing Necas for nothing. They'll have lots of cap space to work with if they don't but the other top end free agents Marner, Ehlers etc. aren't quite in the same ballpark as players and even if you have the cap for them doesn't mean they'll sign with you and not someone else. Carolina can't afford to lose out on Mikko like they did Guentzel last year. I also don't think they're really much better right now than they were last year going into the playoffs. Rantanen's obviously a huge get but I don't think their D is as good and looks like they'll be riding Kochetkov.....and he's a pretty good goalie but he's not going to steal too many and now and again he's going to have bad nights. Maybe it could be argued he's a top 20 goalie.

Slavin is great. Ghost is a good not great power play guy and he's worked pretty hard on his D. Walker's underrated and Chatfield's best as a bottom pairing guy. Nikishin looks like he could be a stud--but he's still got to come over and show it. There's some chance in the next couple years he could be their go to guy. Morrow's also a really good prospect.

If anything, it should increase the leverage. I know there has been talk about New Jersey and Saint Louis, but the Canes and the Rangers were the top dogs in JT Miller sweepstakes. Now, the Canes are out.

I see what you’re saying, but to me, Pettersons price just dropped. Sign me right the f*ck up for that as long as Laf or GP do not go the other way. That’s a guy I let the 1st this year go for because we suck all of earths balls at drafting.

I must reiterate, f*ck JT Miller.

put it this way chatfield is better than vaakaneinen.

but the point is that those guys are all relatively cheap and/or cost controlled for this season and the next 2. it's a fantastic flexible setup.

if Slavin is at 6.4, what's fair for K'Andre? 5 even? he's gonna get way more than that, and likely protection clauses.

I don't know. EP's massive drop-off in skating after the knee injury is very concerning. Pair that with his seemingly lackadaisical attitude and I don't want him or Miller.

The last thing the Rangers need is another Mika.

Teams playoff success may play a role in their offer. They bought a lot of time to evaluate him in this trade.

I suppose you’re right.

I guess it’s the combo of us whiffing AND having bad luck in that draft + shiny & new, not incredibly old toy syndrome I’m suffering from.

I still don’t believe in this team to make a serious run this year. First round bounce or second round max if Shesty plays absolutely out of his mind IMO.

Yup stuck in the dreaded middle. At least they've done well with middle/late 1sts recently.

I'm not ecstatic about either, but I DO believe in 2nd chances and J.T. has done much growing up since yesteryear. He'd be a solid addition, not sure about the $$ OR who we'd have to give up. Would Imagine retention $$ on Mika (force him) or Kreider (same) Jones he screwed himself, (but don't blame him w/apparently no future here), and a good prospect. Otherwise, to hell with it.

@Machinehead perfectly fine with the cheap G lol

Dallas seems like they’re in the running, should knock us out as it’s much easier of a trading partner from Vans perspective, no?

If Im Carolina I look at it this way,

1. They get a real extended look of around 40 games plus playoffs before deciding what to offer him. That is better than some 20 game rental.

2. They feel this moves gives them a chance to get a Cup this year.
Yeah Nicky, that's exactly my take on it. A much longer look on BOTH ENDS of it though. Gives Rantanen a good look and a chance to fall in love with Caneamania. Carolina prides themselves on the unity and the City being behind them 1000%. Of course he is going to want to get paid, but re-signing him would be HUGE for them.

I too think Hall "might" be washed up, certainly no semblance of whwt he was, BUT maybe he just needs to collect that "winning" attitude that he once had with Edmonton.

Happy Necas is out of the Rangers collective arse, but then again we play them tomorrow now, don't we?

Its a risky trade but I think Necas may need a contract soon as well so it is an educated risk. They say safe money doesn't make money. Carolina went for it last season and they are this season as well. I have to respect that since sometimes these windows close fast. :)

I came to the NYR boards to see other fans' take on our Rantanen trade and was not disappointed. I wanted to give kudos for the measured and thoughtful commentary. For what it's worth I am a typical fan asshole who roots against y'all unceremoniously (it's only fair after y'all bouncin' us from the playoffs!) but weirdly I like a bunch of players on your team. Like, Chris Kreider singehandedly ended our season but damn you have to respect that once-in-a-lifetime clutch performance. Edit - also a fan of Will Cuylle, K'Andre (y'all have given him a bad rap this year but he always seems to play well against us) and Trocheck is a rat but such a fun player to have on your team. Do right by Vinny - y'all got a good one from us there.

Anyway.

I think the reasoning is we can afford to overpay one guy if the rest of the team is locked in big. Also with the cap increasing, a big ticket contract for Rantanen may be fair as the rising cap lifts all boats. Kind of like how Panarin seemed real steep at first but it's proven to be a real fair deal for a backbone member of your team, a guy you build around. As a Canes fan I hope we can get him for a tiny discount with the 8th year, maybe $12.5Mx8. Seems fair. Gives the guy a cool hundred mil and the only way to match that with 7 is someone beating $14.3M. Then it depends on the culture fit with Rod and Aho.

Take care of Lavi. He's a hell of a coach and I hope y'all keep him around a little longer. Without Lavi we don't win a cup in '06, period. Also, what a weird year in the Metro where I figured for sure the Rangers and Devs would be LOCKS for the top two seeds and here we are. As strange as it may be for y'all to read, as a Canes fan, I'd sooner play the Devils, then the Caps, and then y'all. I fear the Rangers in the playoffs way more than the other teams in the Metro. Maybe it's simply Igor trauma, but probably it's the way your gameplan gives us fits on special teams and how you can always get efficiency in your scoring chances. You also play a tight defensive game in the playoffs against us and really limit our ability to make rebound chances in close.

Cheers.

Miller is a better player than EP right now but EP has the pedigree and the age in his favor.

I’d trade Laf + for him for sure

Cheers. I do think you'll get a discount because there's no income tax in your state. But this is a big move for y'all. Hope we can eliminate you again this year.
