Classic damage control. Kakko isnt Gretzky but the trade surely shows how f***ed up the organization is. Trade will look absolutely horrific in few years. People here speak about how Kakko got his chance in top lines, yeah thats true but you need to build the team around likes of Lafreniere and Kakko.
Yeah this is the answer. He played on two lines that basically refused to pass to him. Panarin flat out didn’t want to play with him, he could have elevated him but no. Horrible asset management, this is another buchnevich all over again

What damage control, we traded a young 3rd liner. It's not serious. He hasn't shown a damn thing for anyone to think he's some untapped offensive stud.

Can you guys calm down? Kakko is getting first line minutes on a kraken team that’s significantly worse than the Rangers. He’s going to get points.

Would you rather have Kakko score 60 points a season on a team that loses 45 games, or have a competitive team that makes the playoffs?

Kakko has 7 points in 10 games since the trade. The Kraken are 3-6-1

lol i'm loving this. Kakko scoring points is a bad thing for the team he's on!

Who said it's a "bad" thing? But it's a pretty known phenomenon where a mid- (or lower)-tier player from a better team moves to a worse team where he's able to score more points due to playing in a more prominent role with more minutes, while that production doesn't improve said team overall performance.

Kraken still has to look to acquire better players to turn itself around into first a playoff team and then a legitimate contender. As this happens Kakko could continue to remain a part of their future core but is he going to continue getting the same opportunities as better players are acquired? Far from a guaranteed.

Uh... you act like those are the only two options.

We're currently on option three, where the team is a non playoff team and Kakko was still not scoring.

So yeah... I would have rathered the team try to inflate his stats a bit before trading him for peanuts. Especially since the rest of the team is garbage anyway.

Instead they healthy scratched him and got basically nothing for him.

The Rangers are simply the worst team in the league at asset management. Sell low, buy high. That's the Rongos way.

Alternative suggestion - Kakko should have been traded in summer 2023. Keeping him beyond then was the Rongos way.

This only matters if your goal is to win trades and not hockey games.

Utah has been winning trades for infinity years. Doesn't seem to help much.

'Winning' the asset game i would wager has weak correlation at best.

caveat:depending on the importance of the asset to the team. the tkachuk deal was huge for florida. Eichel deal huge for vegas. Winning the big deals matters a lot.

The reason this deal isn't a "huge deal" for NYR is that they never gave Kakko the opportunity to become a Core Piece.

Bread/Butter(Strome->Troch), Wonder Twinz, Fox Lindgren Trouba, Goodrow.

this was the core. the pull the goalie guys.

Sam Reinhart has 94 goals since the start of last season including the 2024 playoffs. I was watching the Flyers feed of the Panthers-Flyers game. Jim Jackson said 94 goals. Reinhart was shit in Buffalo. He has decent. He is Mike Bossy in Florida. He was taken 2nd overall in 2014 and they said he wouldn't an elite player. He is playing like an elite player.

This is ridiculous.

Two goals last night. Two games against Boston on Saturday afternoon. He doesn't need much time and space to score. On his stick and he shoots it. 5 shorthanded goals this season.

Sam has definitely been better in Florida but he was already starting to improve in Buffalo in his last few seasons (60 point per 82 pace). He could always shoot but looking at that clip he seems to have improved his skating.

Reinhart substantially improved his skating. He also developed a chip on his shoulder.

Imagine that. Our 1 and 2 OAs couldn’t be bothered to work on their skating. It’s easier to just complain about opportunity and coast than it is to take ownership of your own destiny and grind. You were a high pick and you wanna be a high profile NHLer? Put in the work. Reinhart did. He improved tremendously. He’s also a very good two way player now.

Some of what is happening with Reinhardt is that his linemates are capable of pulling guys to them, even if its just a half step. That makes a BIG difference

Some Canadiens player was hit by a car in Salt Lake City and will miss 3-4 weeks UBI.

Kakko did have a skating coach basically every summer of his NHL career. But maybe someone should've told him (looking at you Rangers) that maybe you ought to try something different because it's not working.

There are no Kovalevs in today's game. Everyone (ok, maybe you might find one or two exceptions) who makes it into the NHL works hard. It's not an issue of motivation or bothering, but finding the right methods. And IMO, a lot of that direction should be coming from a professional organization, instead of letting these young, talented players just "figure it out" by themselves.
