As a mod warning, absolutely do not post the video of the unfortunate skate accident here.
The video looks like it was shot on a potato (what I've seen is a recording of the video on a computer). It's really hard to see exactly where he got caught, and the one video I saw that tried to zoom in made the picture even worse. The guy whose skate caught him was contacted in an awkward way and it basically ended up being like a roundhouse kick. A lot of force to it. Just awful.I didn't watch it and don't plan on it. But for those who did see it, would neck protection have done anything to prevent it?
Remember when the Edge uniforms first came out and the socks were cut resistant. I wonder if this could push player safety to decide that cut resistant under shirts that cover the neck and wrists be mandatory the way visors became mandatory.
It's a dangerous game. And it's a tragic loss of young life.
I remember when that Spooner thing came out some people tried to brush it off as just some disgruntled former player that wasn't worth looking at. If you listen to the whole thing it didn't come off that way. Seemed like some genuine critiques of a guy who was getting his first taste as a head coach in the league. A few eye opening things here and there. I know people put a lot of blame on Bobrov for steering different players/prospects in a particular direction about their role and/or readiness. But frankly, it seemed like Quinn was just as guilty for that sort of stuff.
That was a red flag for me.. I hated how he used Spooner. This was a guy who spent a few years in Boston cementing himself in the middle six, that year he got traded to us he really started coming into his own as a top 6 player. That stretch he had with us to finish that year, playing with guys like Hayes and Zuccarello.. very encouraging. That was the most ice time he had ever played, and unsurprisingly produced at the highest rate he ever had. To follow it up the next year where DQ gave him VERY little opportunity in the top 6 and instead opted for players that fitted Quinn's "play style", Vesey, Fast, Namestnikov... it was ridiculous. Jimmy Vesey finished that year playing 16 minutes a game while being allotted powerplay time and amassed a whopping 35 points. Even more ridiculous the fact, Spooner was a productive feature on Bostons PP. Luckily Strome found a temporary home here so all was forgotten at the time.
I know that Shark team isn't very good, but to see them off to this abomination of a start... David Quinn is the coach you hire if you want a top 5 pick.. just don't have any players/prospects around that you intend to keep in the future
I see Thornton has officially hung them up.
Good riddance.
Terrible. I hope this didn't happen in vain and they discuss equipment to protect vulnerable areas like the throat and wrists. Something that wouldn't restrict mobility and something that breathes. But from the way you describe it I'm not sure anything would have helped. Just awful.
Just as awful are the people who obviously don't follow hockey at all who are claiming it was reckless at best, intentional at worst.
wait how is it possible to dislike jumbo? great player and a first ballot hall of fame locker room guy. one of the all time good guys/characters in the game
Said the Rangers were soft, during the Torts years of all years. Stole the Hart from Jagr because he was Canadian. One of the biggest playoff chokers of all time.
