The Devils are finding out what it is like to be the favorites. Many people predicted big things for them. It's early. Ruff benched Meier last night after taking two penalties in the second period. Meier hasn’t been good in Jersey. Even last season after the trade. Meier went from being the guy in San Jose to playing second unit PP in Jersey. There is one puck. You can make the argument Meier has been the Devils worst player this season. Fitzgerald paid him a fortune. Luke Hughes was hurt in camp. The Devils lost Severson and Graves. Those guys aren't great players but they played key minutes. The Devils need to replace those minutes. The Devils acquired Miller from Dallas. He hasn’t played a game. Ruff benched Marino last night.

Ruff had his new job security for 15 minutes before he started benching lineup regulars haha. Im sure Debbies fans are handling that well. Selfishly, Im hoping the Devils handicapped themselves with the Bratt and Meier contracts. 17 mil for 2 guys who play the exact same role in the lineup. Shouldve traded one for a defenseman knowing theyd let Graves and Severson walk.

This is how you handle it though.

Gallant/AV would have responded by just playing them more.

Regarding debbies, I'm still interested in the Andrew Brunette effect. Or rather lack thereof, since he's now with Nashville. I've got a feeling he was the brains behind their playing style.

Thinking the same, the Devils looked awful against the Yotes

Can't really say that. It's early and anything he brought to the table has most likely been documented in some way and it's not hard to implement things that someone else is doing even if they weren't there.

It may make an impact down the line because maybe he was the mastermind behind certain adjustments that they made along the way last season but to this point, I don't think his absence has made much of a difference.

They've gotten off to a bit of a tough start and I hope theres more of that to come. They're lucky they aren't 0-3.

This article is from 3 years ago, but there are Rangers connections, so thought I'd post it.

I was looking through Hockey Reference draft data and saw a goalie named Nolan Schaefer. I don't recall him playing, but his stat line jumped out at me. 5-1 with .920 sv% and 1.88 gaa. I wondered why he didn't get more of a chance in the NHL, so I did some digging and found this:

It has a paywall, but they give you enough for free to get the good parts, at least as they relate to the Rangers.

Dumba diving all over the place. Doesn't take much to get the man down on one knee.

The Devils played a trap that isn't really like anything that teams who use it today play, though it is the grandfather of them. They used almost a 1-4/2-3 hybrid cause their "defenseman" back was just Marty. He was that good at playing the puck.

Kaiden Guhle also injured. Making fun of Rammer satirically is not something I would have expected but here we are.
