I was just in St. Augustine for my best mates wedding in January. Rowdiest small wedding you could imagine, maybe 75 guests but 50 vets (including parents of other vets - they still know how to party). Somehow we had a tattoo artist on site doing free tattoos all night with no regard for the massive levels of inebriation - needless to say, some poor decisions were made by folks. The area is great and not a place we would be opposed to ending up in, though I think our hearts are in TX, which is also very affordable and veteran dense. Ironically, the friend who was getting married just bought 7 acres an hour or so east of Dallas and is moving at the end of August. If I can navigate a decent enough job down there, and avoid my credit score taking a hit in the interim, I can use my VA loan to get a ton more house than I’d ever afford around here (and frankly, we don’t plan on having more kids so a small house with some land is more than enough) have a mortgage that’s as good (or better) than even a cheap rental up here and actually start building equity in something instead of continuing to light my money on fire. The things that I would do for $5000 right now are obscene and, of course, spending my free time bickering over whether a marginal depth forward in the NHL is overpaid at 900k vs 775k does not help keep my frame of mind very healthy.

We live just North of St Augustine and it's a great area. Lots going on and I would imagine there would be some staffing opportunities for you here, on top of service area jobs (which I am sure are not what you are looking for but do make good money in a bustling area).

Good luck man, if I can help in any way just PM me. Happy to do what I can

… anyone ever filed for bankruptcy?

The division of my company that I work for (MA based company, offices throughout the NE) took a gamble on a NYC office but has decided to fold the NY operation and I haven’t been here long enough to get any real severance. If anyone recalls my sob story from 2 years ago, I had only just started to dig myself out of debt and get things moving in a positive direction and frankly, this is about as devastating a blow as could have come. We just moved into a house (rent) in NJ to be closer to my work, we’ve got medical bills from Henrik’s birth, car payments, etc.

I’m currently considering surrendering both vehicles waiting for the invoice on the owed amount and then declaring bankruptcy to discharge the debt because I don’t know how I’m going to pay next months rent, let alone anything else, right now.

Y’all business owners? I’m multi-talented, I’m sure I can be useful. Man, I really f***ed up not doing my full 20 in the Air Force. It’s been struggle after struggle since… I get why veteran suicide rates are so high. No, not me. Not saying that. I’ve got Henrik and the Mrs and another season of futility to look forward to, my health, good family, etc. but with my post-military experience so far, it’s easy to see how those with less end up in a really bad place.

Apologies for the massively off-topic poor me post. HFNYR is the closest thing to a friend circle I have since leaving the military and I’m honestly just floored by the news I’ve just received that we’re going to close the NY office. If anyone needs someone disappeared, a cool 10k really changes my life right now, ya know?

Time for some rot gut, budget whiskey and a very somber night with the missus once I get off the train. Holy hell.
Man, sorry to hear this. Hopefully things work out for you and your family. The posts before this one have some good ideas for you. NY is expensive; I don't think Texas has a state income tax. An article in the NY Post not long ago had stories of people moving out of NYC because of cost (and likely for other reasons too). Hang in there and stay strong; there will be better days ahead :thumbu:

Yeah, I live a little north and west (Fleming Island)

But, same goes for me. I have friends in a ton of industries here and maybe I can help you too @LokiDog - just reach out.

Great area and it was a low(er) cost to buy homes 10 years ago. It's not so cheap now but certainly a whole lot better than anywhere near NYC.

How specialized is what you do? Will you have a difficult time finding another job?

There's a lot of negativity that goes into bankruptcy - including the ability to rent future homes/apartments, secure credit, loans for cars, etc...

I'd really REALLY try to avoid that.

Maybe get out of NY and find an affordable place to live/survive
Avoid bankruptcy at all costs. It will set you back even further then the hole you're in now. As stated by Haohmaru it will ruin your credit, taking out any kind of loan will be difficult renting or buying a home will be tough. One of the first items any apartments complex checks is for bankruptcy's which as you can imagine is a huge turnoff. I agree with most Florida and Texas are booming, personally the company I worked for has more new projects in Texas then in most of our other states combined, Florida would be second and is still on the east coast if that matters to your family. As far as your medical bills speak with the hospital and see if you can get some assistance, as long as you continue to pay something each month, they can't put you into collections, we were going to do this after my father pasted away but luckily the dept was cleared. My parents were way in dept spending a quarter only making a nickel, taking out credit cards to pay down dept. Try to consolidate before bankruptcy if you can, you might get lucky working with the banks on your situation. Good luck on which ever road you take, remember were all here if you need to blow off some steam.

But I was told last year that Cole was a giant POS because someone anonymously accused him of being a toxic male on the internet.
I really don't have an opinion on this, but just because he did good on this occasion hardly means he couldn't still have done all the shit he was accused of.

My mother filed for chapter 7 back in 2018. Chapter 7 stays on your credit report for 10 years, but it is discharged about 6 months after approval. Once discharged you can begin applying for credit again. Of course your credit score will be in the toilet, but you can start rebuilding it. Truth be told, you’ll be flooded with offers for credit cards and loans. These institutions know when there’s blood in the water.

But we’re 5 years out from her filing and she’s already got a couple of low balance credit cards.

Chapter 13 will have you pay some of your debt over time. It stays on your report for a shorter period but doesn’t get discharged until the final payment is made.

You’ll also have to take some credit training class if I remember correctly.

Considering you're not a poster here on the Rangers board & the fact that you've gone out of your way to reply to this tells me you probably have a very strong opinion on this. One that is most likely 180˚ opposite of mine.

Now I'm getting involved in something that I know literally nothing about--jniklast is one of ours, I just don't think they post much anymore. Seriously though I don't even know about the Cole thing so I'll be seeing myself out.

I've actually never seen him or her around before in my 7 years here. I guess they've become more a lurker.

I've been a poster on the Rangers board since 2007, I simply haven't been that active in recent years. But why do you take this argument ad hominem? All I'm saying is, that one good deed doesn't prove you never did anything wrong. Do you think that statement is false and if so, why? Or are you more interested in continuing to discuss my past contributions to this board?

Yeah exactly, getting older, watching the NHL from Europe is getting more and more difficult. Watching in the middle of the night is much harder with a job than as a student 😄. And thus I'm not posting that much anymore either, but I'm still reading this board daily.

I've never seen any of your past contributions, which is why I thought you were a SJW from the main boards. I'm not looking to argue at all...you're the one who commented on what I had to say, not the other way around. IMO, It's too sensitive a subject to come out of the woodwork with a reply like that when we have no history with one another. Had we had any prior rapport whatsoever, I wouldn't have responded the way I did.

Here's a little back story....I got completely roasted in the main boards last year when Cole was first accused. Every millennial & Gen Z cancel culture hero was out for blood. A few other posters & I were trying to be the voices of reason simply telling people to wait to more facts come out & not jump to conclusions. Because of that I was labeled a rape apologist & told that I was probably a rapist myself. Yes, that happened. Then I was thread banned for calling out these idiots in a forceful, yet civil manner. The main board mods were carrying pitchforks with the mob...it wasn't pretty. My fault for venturing into those waters, but it was tough to watch in real time.

Now that I know you're a long time member of the NYR boards, I'll temper my replies to you accordingly... but I'd rather talk about trading Igor to be honest.

I moved from NY to Texas. It was such a cheaper easier way of life when I did. It was a great change. Problem is some areas of Texas are getting expensive now with so many people moving there.

@LokiDog I have a financial background. If I can help feel free to message me. Please do keep in mind tough times are temporary. I know a person that was down to his last 5 cents with $60k in debt in 2009 and now he is pretty well off. Hoping things go your way soon.
