Wait.... How does Taylor Hall fit the timeline better? They're the same age but one is made of glass

LOL the same people vehemently anti-Panarin, are pro Hall... makes so much sense

Yep. 7-year deal for Hall next year takes him to 35. 7-year deal for Panarin this year takes him to 34. If the real concern is these players deteriorating, signing Panarin now is a better idea than signing Hall next year.

Though a big concern of anti-Panarin people is making the team enough better next year to hurt our lottery chances or have a lower pick than without the signing.

Not signing Panarin guarantees us being considerably worse next year, which I think is appealing to many.

Because next season we'll have had another year of acquiring high-value assets, and we will have a much better understanding about what a good deal of our NHL ready or playing prospect really project to be.

Pretty simple stuff actually, not really that hard to understand.

the only thing that works better with the timing of Hall is that next summer you might have a slightly clearer picture of whether or not we need a center or wing or d, depending on how this season guys. But those will still be unknowns just slighly less unknowns maybe. so really the only advantage is that next summer we might know that we shouldn't sign a wing and not sign him. But if you are going to sign a winger there is zero advantage to hall over panarin.

Word is Marner will test the offer sheet market. Is this something to take a look at? He’s young enough to fit the rebuild.

IMO the only player worth four 1st round picks is Connor McDavid
I agree it’s a stiff price to pay. Other than Alex Lafrenniere I’m not sure what impact players there are for the next draft. And forget looking at draft years beyond that. I think there could be a few offer sheets this summer. Laine is a possibility as well. Salaries are out of control and I see teams getting offer sheeted more often in the future.

To add, if he takes 10.5m or less the price is 2 1st round picks, a 2nd in 2020 and a 3rd in 2020.
If he signs for over 10.5m then it’s 4 Ist rounders.

people say this every year and then it almost ever happens. offer sheets are practically non-existent in the nhl

The entire top 10 is filled with impact guys.

Thats not a pick you want to move when we're probably still going to be bad.

But can the Leafs pay over 30m for 3 players? I added to my earlier post so it’s not unthinkable to suggest he does leave Toronto.

How about no to both?

Like the biggest of No's to Hall though. I get the excitement about sticking it to the Devils, but let him go somewhere else, same effect plus we won't have to deal with whats going to be a horrendous contract for 7 years.

we don't have the picks to make an offer sheet for less than 10.5 mil. we either give up 4 1st or sign a guy for so little there is no compensation...and for less than 10.5 mil the leafs will just say thanks for negotiating for us and match the offer. in order to get the team to walk away you'd have to severally overpay which would screw up your own cap, unless the offer sheet was like 1-2 years and then you re-sign the guy long term for a normal cap hit but the player isn't taking that cap hit.

leafs might be forced to trade him but it won't be an offer sheet.

Ahh, good point. Didn’t realize the picks were gone. Was just kicking tires on him

because if the intent of 19-20 is to continue to build the foundation (with the 2020 draft looking exceptional), now it not the off-season to add top end UFA talent.

Signing Panarin this season might be the difference between another top-5 pick, and a 10+ pick.

I would imagine they will figure out how to match anything below 10.5M. And to offer him more would cost 4 first rounders.

Marner will be a top 5 forward in the league.

I'd give him 10M though and trade away 2 1sts, 2nd, and 3rd.

(preparing myself for the backlash!)

Haha, I don’t think any backlash is warranted. Who wouldn’t want a 100pt guy for the next 8 years? Losing 2 1sts, a 2nd and 3rd could hurt but could also easily be recouped through future trades. Besides there’s no guarantee on the picks or their number in the draft. Hell, you could get a Yakupov, who knows? Atleast with Marner your getting a known commodity. I think some teams would love to offer sheet this year.

Kevin Hayes rights traded toPhilly for a 5th. Long shot of him re-signing with NYR is gone.

if we even want him at his asking price and his rights being traded has little impact on anyone's ability to sign him. Hayes walked away from CHI who spent a 1st round pick on him, he can walk away from PHI who spent a 5th on him. He's not the type to sign with whoever just because they acquired his rights.
