Thank you NJ for making my Monday eve a great one! What a way to clinch hehe

So Torts officially failed with the Canucks, after losing tonight they have no chance to reach the playoffs.

He'll probably get canned...GM too.

I made a bet with a Devils fan friend at the beginning of the season that the Rangers would finish at least 7 points ahead of NJ. Looks like I'm going to be sweating that out until the last game. I should be a handicapper.

Yeah the Canucks mailed that game in from the very beginning.

18 SOG against a goalie making his debut on your ice facing elimination?

It's hard to see Tortorella being back outside of economic reasons.

Looks like only one Canadian team (Montreal) in the playoffs, that's incredible.

Still a small chance for Toronto.

They need to sort out their stuff up there.

They gave him a 5 year contract too (I believe) so if they fire him I'm pretty sure he just collects a paycheck to do nothing?

I think Torts gets another year... just in the same as if we failed to make the playoffs here, AV wouldn't be canned on the first season... THat's Edmonton's Job :sarcasm:

Devils are officially eliminated if:

Philly, Detroit and Columbus hit 90 points

OR

They lose 3 of their next 4

Yeah they'll have to buy him out, his contract is 2M X 5.

I believe Torts is finished, because the GM said he wants the team to play a different style. And if Torts doesn't want to adjust, he's gone.

Can you imagine him changing his system? I can't..

Daniel Sedin and Alex Burrows have combined for 6 goals and 14 points in 2014. 5 goals and 10 of the points are from Burrows.

Crazy.

Fitting that on the same day the Rangers clinch the Canucks get booted. I started to go back to being indifferent to the Canucks again until the Burrows hit. **** them.

Gillis is an awful GM, just awful.
On top of that, the idea of turning that group into a bunch of 'Torts kind of players' was a bit far-fetched.

I'm gonna get perma-banned on this site, but I think there's an argument that Giordano had a better season than McDonagh. He is very steady defensively, has 46 points out of 61 games, and is a +12 player on a Flames team that is -27 and a defensive disaster outside of him and Brodie. He should get some Norris votes, but he won't.

Giordano is an incredible defenseman, who's having a true breakout year. I don't think he's as good as McDonagh defensively, he definitely gravitates more towards offense; especially with Bob Hartley's system of crazy pinching by defensemen. He's definitely top 15 in the league, great UDFA story.

McDonaugh has played not even a full season without having a leash around his neck and is producing amazingly. I wouldn't throw him under the bus just yet.

Larry Brooks vs Tortorella

Larry Brooks not really sugar coating it

http://nypost.com/2014/03/31/good-chance-tortorella-gets-fired-after-this-season/

A couple quotes from the article:
Tortorella’s narrow vision has done him and his team in this year. He has become the worst kind of zealot behind the bench, believing his way is the only way to win games regardless of his playing personnel, even if that means pounding square pegs into round holes. He is a zealot, a true believer that grinding, blocking shots and packing the defensive end is the one and only route to success.
It seems as if the same song is playing across the continent almost 2,500 miles away. Except where it took five years in New York, it took five months in Vancouver.

Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Smart guys learn. Idiots don’t.

I think Brooks' point about Torts being stubborn and unwilling to change is accurate. He's over the top in his descriptive language, though, and is pretty clearly just being inflammatory. That's kind of his shtick, as we know.

I don't really buy the idea that he thinks it's the only way to win. He didn't come to New York employing the style that he eventually left with. Remember, Safe is Death? He was the guy, replacing Tom Renney, that was going to unlock our latent offensive ability. We expected up-tempo offensive hockey. It didn't work with what we had, and he changed gears. He was successful with that approach, and now he's locked into it. It does show however that he's at least capable of changing his philosophy.
