So if the Flyers and Blue Jackets lose today, the Rangers would need 3 points in their last 3 games to clinch the 2nd seed in the division. And that's if either the Flyers and/or Blue Jackets win out their remaining games.
A Devils loss Monday night or 1 point in the Rangers last 3 games clinches at least a playoff spot.
Does that sound right?
Rangers have 91, and max is 97 - own tiebreakers as of now.
Flyers have 87, and max is 97.
CBJ have 85, and max is 95.
Devils have 84, and max is 92.
Looks like the Rangers magic number for home ice is 6 over the Flyers (and for a complete clinch) - as they own the tiebreaker as of now. If the Flyers lose today, the Rangers will need four points, not three.
The Rangers magic number for home ice over the Blue Jackets looks like four. Two if the Blue Jackets lose today.
And, as we all unfortunately know too well, their magic number is 1 point over the Devils to clinch the playoffs.
Magic numbers work in the sense that they are a total of points necessary for other teams to lose, or the Rangers to gain.
