So the Oilers beat the Ducks, almost beat the Sharks and are now beating and it looks like outplaying the Ducks. Maybe our 5-0 win was a lot more impressive in hindsight.

Every time I watch the LA Kings I die a little inside. They are killing this beautiful sport. The a boring, ugly team. The fact that they have had success is a travesty. This has nothing to do with them being physical either. I love watching the Bruins play.

I actually like watching the kings...maybe you have a hatred toward them because that was suppose to be our cup:naughty:

We gave a ton for Nash who brings less offensively and the same defensively as Ovechkin. So either there has been a change of heart or people aren't keen to repeat mistakes.

wtf?

Nash backchecks all the time, AND he kills penalties.

to put them in the same sentence, either defensive OR offensively is practically offensive.

By the end of tonight we'll know if Columbus has any chance of overtaking Philadelphia, or if we'll pretty much just be playing Philly.

Nash for OV straight up is a no-brainer. Ovechkin's one of the best goalscorers in the game today, he averages about 15 more goals a season than Nash. For a team that has trouble scoring goals, I would take the 50 goal scorer over the 35 goal scorer easily. Ovechkin is the superior offensive player by a significant margin.

Ovechkin is a liability. If he scores around an average of a goal a game and is on the ice for an average of around a goal and a half a game against, how exactly does this help your team?

Sure, the guy is fun to watch, but leading the league in goals and being 862nd in +/- is just stupefying.

OV scores 50-60 goals in a system that lets him run wild and do has he pleases. Put him under a coach who wants to implement an actual game plan, and his numbers would likely drop by 15 goals or so.

So the real comparison is a 30-35 goal scorer who at least tries to help with D, and a 40-45 goal scorer who gives no ****s.

His goal totals would drop, but other aspects would probably improve.

Ovechkin will be playing with the likes of McDonagh instead of defensive liabilities like Mike Green. We have a stronger commitment to defense and the superior defensive personnel which would probably benefit Ovechkin in his own zone. Plus/minus is a flawed stat - Backstrom is a great defensive center and he is a -21 this year, it seems like there are some issues with Washington's defense that go well beyond Ovechkin.

And Nash may PK, but he isn't exactly a stalwart defensively either. I've seen him dog it on the backcheck numerous times and his effort is questionable at times. Nash has a bit of an edge over Ovechkin defensively but neither of these players are Selke Award nominees. I choose Ovechkin because he's the better offensive player and he doesn't pull the invisibility act as often as Nash does.

You can't teach effort.

Ovechkin isn't interested in his side of the blue line and I don't care about who he's playing with or who the coach is. It's dogged him his entire career. The above was a super important game and he's going for a skate in Rockville Center. Unacceptable. I don't want him here.

Two words - Brett Hull.

One year he had similar numbers to the season Ovie is having. He became more responsible as he matured and had leaders around him. Caps need to do the same if they plan on keeping him, which I think they will.

Bluenote, Brett Hull was the player that came to mind last night, thinking about Ovechkin. The difference is Ovechkin is in a salary cap era, and a crappy GM.

Both of these are incredibly undesirable matchups, IMO.

From an entertainment standpoint however they will be second to none.

yeah, sucks PHX couldn't get a goal... it looked like LA was completely turtling and yet they were still scoring... almost as bad as Minny Wild hockey (yuck)

And still I don't think that's too much to overcome. Ovie will be 29 in September. Hull had his similar season at 29 yrs old as well, but became alot more responsible the next 4 seasons, scoring 170 goals in the process.
