Gotta admit not having Hedman and Stralman is hurting their defense big time. They don't have much back there when it comes down to it.

There have been plenty of Presidents Trophy letdowns over the decades. This one obviously is not official yet.
Third period could be awesome hockey.

One good thing is they walked away from McDonough.. what a loser.

He went from great to good , to just this vanilla player.

It's a shame. See everyone raving about Seth Jones.. that is a perfect comparable for Mac during his peak of 2012-14. He looked primed to be a perennial Norris contender. Between those two significant shoulder injuries, not being able to handle the C, nearly killing Zucc, and AV ruining him... it was all down hill really quickly for Mac and he had been living hard off his reputation he earned during those two years since.

It is still arguable that we should have gotten better value in that trade with Tampa... but indisputable that we got rid of McDonagh at the perfect time. That contract is going to get ugly really quick by like year 2 or 3. The hope for Tampa was they would have a Cup by now so it would have been worth it.

Now.... not so much.

There was a lot of talk about McD being “back” this season and I always kind of balked at that a bit.

Playing behind the reigning Norris trophy winner, as a second pair defenseman, on an offensively inclined teams. I felt it was more an ideal fit than a renaissance.

Now Hedman is out and I just don’t think McD is that guy who leads the charge. I think he’s kind of exposed for what he is at this point - a support guy. An excellent support guy mind you, but a support guy nonetheless.

I agree, and at the same time I don't really fault the Lightning. They were going for it and it's not like proven Dmen in their prime (age-wise) were available everywhere. It was not proven that McDonagh would not pick up after getting over those bad enough injuries. For me, it was just a recognition that the Rangers shouldn't be the team to see if that happens or not.

So what do you do if you're Tampa? How do you "fix" this? ****ty situation for them.

You make the trades that look tough on paper - you sacrifice offense for a more balanced roster.

That might mean trading a guy with impressive numbers for two guys who combined might put up fewer point.

You seek an element of power to go with finesse, and find guys who can help shut down opposing players — not just outscore them.

Yep, I was typing something kind of along these lines and posted it before I read what you wrote here.

Miller used to make some surprising (in the good way) plays for NYR. Maybe that's what kept me holding out hope for him until 'onion-rings gate' and his departure soon afterward. I was stubborn about what I saw as talent he had, maybe too stubborn.

11 minutes.

Me getting ready to torture some souls:

I mean he among the league leaders in +/- and had 46 points. And had his best stretch of the season when Hedman was out. It's all fallen apart for him in the playoffs though which is what he should he rightfully so judged upon.

Kucherov needs a punch in the face. Nasty cross check. Surprised no one beats his ass.

Hypothetical fellas: If Tampa loses to Jackets in a sweep, does this go down as THE most humiliating playoff defeat in history? I'm going to venture yes as only things that comes close top of my head is when Kings beat Oilers in '82 playoffs as Oilers were 48 points better. And even our Rangers beating the Islanders in '79 ECF as they had I think the Isles had 40 more points than us.
