No way! We also drafted Lundqvist 205th overall in the same draft that the Islanders took DiPietro #1 overall. Drafting is different here!

And I forgot Staal was a bad pick.

:p:

And we also picked Del Zaster ahead of Carlson and Eberle, and Miller, #15(who I like btw and will be really good) while the Black Hawks took Saad #43 and he is up for the calder trophy.

I didn't say Staal was a bad pick, but he aint no Letang!
We'll just leave out the 03 and 06 drafts for obvious reasons.

Drafting definitely is different here!

Saad may be up for the Calder Trophy, but that doesn't mean he's a better player or has a higher ceiling than Miller. Time will tell.

The definition of a bridge contract is going between ELC and UFA statuses. So yes, it is EXACTLY a bridge contract. You give a guy a raise to a number like $3.5m with the expectation that, by the end of it, he's probably playing on your top pair.

What he would go for on the open market doesn't come into the equation. Guys near the end of their bridge contracts are almost always "steals" by that definition.

He was coming off a 26 point year and he was making peanuts because he was not a highly touted prospect.

The following year he broke out. 3.5 million for a top-4 d-man who is undersized and had scored 26 points is actually a fairly decent contract.
My point is that it's a steal right now. Not a steal when he signed the deal. Right now, guys like Giroux and Letang have the best contracts in the league. They didn't when they signed them, but they do now.

I agree and I like Miller a lot it's just that teams like the Pens and Black Hawks are run by terrific gm's while we're stuck with "the senile old fool."

Those types of contracts can also bite teams in the ass....Tyler Myers is a good example. Milan Lucic is another.

I really disagree with that. What makes a contract a steal is that they're getting significantly less than they would get if they were a free agent tomorrow. But Letang would be an RFA. He wouldn't get much more for an average (supposing that Shero actually believes in using leverage on RFAs) than he's getting now without eating a bunch of UFA years. Probably somewhere closer to $4.5m for next year.

Giroux is making $5m next season. He's probably going to get $5.5m for his last season of RFA status and jump up to $7m or $8m for UFA years. Some teams spread those numbers out evenly, but that's how those calculations really work.

Neither situation is a massive underpayment.

Those have higher cap hits though. Myers got a contract similar to what Wizneiwski got as a UFA to CBJ. Lucic just got his third contract. (Unless you're talking about the 2nd, which is again, a cap hit over 4 million.) Both Letang and Giroux got signed for under 4.

The point is, the Pens gave him more money than he deserved based on his play at that time. In doing so, they were able to keep the cap number down because he had already gotten money up front which kept the cap number down on the back-end.

Some teams like to do that. All I was showing is that when you do that, you are also susceptible to having an Olezs or Frolik situation as well where the player does not replicate it. Letang was good offensively, but no where near as good as he is now.

Giroux is making $5m next season.

Letang is in the running for a Norris and is making the same amount of money as Luke Schenn and Hjalmarrson, both of which signed these deals after their ELC's.

Giroux has another year @ 3.75.

I never said that's what I want the Rangers to necessarily do, if that's what you're implying. Just pointing out that Letang's contract is a very cap-friendly deal for a team paying two superstars.

Most people here are talking about giving McD a 4X4 deal, or something along those lines. So again, not really a stretch. Just saying how I like the contract hes under.

It's part of the New York Rangers Perpetual Cycle of Mediocrityâ„¢: sign big free agent, fail to achieve ultimate goal in playoffs. Rinse and repeat.

its more like this...
sign big free agent, fail to achieve standards, eventually traded while value is low and still receive young NHL players to build around..

:yo: McDonagh for Gomez, Brassard and Moore for Gaborik.. the fact the NYR has received 3 NHL players for Gaborik is a great deal. these arent 4th line players... 2ed liner, 3rd liner and a top 4 dman isnt a bad deal... :handclap: Brassard is only 26. some players realize their potential later in their career.

Uh... what??? Are you talking about the $4 mil contract he's on right now, or the $6 mil contract he signed for the next 3 years? If it's $4 mil... no way is Lucic's contract an example of that. He's been good for $4 mil. Aren't you one of the guys who wants to resign Clowe for similar $$?? Lucic is arguably worth more than Clowe. He has had an off season this season -- and one that hasn't even been all that bad. He has been solid for them in the playoffs so far as well...

And if you're talking the $6 mil contract, I don't think I would really classify that as a bridge contract that has "come back to bite" the Bruins. Personally, I think $6 mil for Lucic is a bit much (though not totally unreasonable), but we'll see what he does. He hasn't even played any seasons on that contract yet.

Why is Luongo not starting? :shakehead

Looking forward to Habs-Sens!

Go Sens! Hoping Gryba lays more clean hits that Habs fans will complain about.

We can sign Letang and Malkin in the same year and revel as they combine for 75 points whilst playing only 60% of their games.

You win some, you lose most. That's drafting outside the top 5 in general. It's very easy to look back at picks and go "Player X was still on the board at pick Y! They ****ed up bad!"

Although some picks are obviously controversial from the get-go.

Yeah I hope they save that money from buying out Richards for that sweet package! :help: :D

Won't lie as July 1st is one of my absolute favorite days, but as I've aged, I've come to prefer being bored that day and patient rather than excited and eventually frustrated with whatever we signed lol.
