Prospects are nice but a pick could turn into anything. It might even turn into a prospect!

Picks certainly allow the chance to dream, kind of like a lottery ticket.

I'm curious as to how they approach some of these potential trades, because what I keep hearing is that the preference would be for prospects (all things being equal).

Unlike Nylander, Marner is the guy I'd throw the kitchen sink to Toronto for. Send over Andersson + a 1st in 2020 for starters
I disagree. Matthews was the player to throw the kitchen sink at. Marner is going to be no where near worth what he gets on his next contract. Edmonton is going to overpay for him and its going to be glorious.

Normally I'd rather see the Rangers go with picks. Obviously case by case should be applied.

However generally any prospect being made available has some sort of flaw, maturity issues, low ceiling, etc.

Draft picks likely have some flaw(s) too, yet the picks are currency that could be used to move up.

I also question how many entry level contracts can the Rangers have which will all require 2nd contracts all within a year or two of each other? Are these prospects going to line up with what they've acquired from the 2016 draft, drafted in 2017 and 2018?

Seems like with picks that gets spread out at least a little bit.

Short of them identifying an available prospect who is a tier above what they received back last deadline, I'd probably rather see them go with picks.

I’m okay with getting a 2nd for Zuccarello if a very good prospect is the center of the deal, say, Fabbro or Addison.

A risk in dealing for prospects instead of picks is the team we're trading with might know something about the prospect heading our way that we don't that, if we did know, we would not have traded for them. I think ADA was a good example in that he had extra baggage we weren't aware of that is hampering his ability to stick in the NHL. Stuff like this about players sometimes comes out but not always, so you have to be extra careful.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tampa saw something in either Hajek and/or Howden behind the scenes that made trading them much easier to swallow. Just speculation, but thus far neither have really been as good as billed (although they haven't really been disappointments either).

Maybe I'm overthinking it

Hajek and Howden have been exactly as billed. Howden a smart middle-6 type C, close to NHL ready. Hajek a 2/3 D upside player who is going to need some time in Hartford.

Hajek/Howden/Lindgren/Rykov are decent prospects and all, yet if they can not find prospects who are a tier higher, I think they should gamble with the picks.

Sometimes you just have to boil it down to, you have to give to get.

They were not about to give up Point or Sergachev. The Rangers really had to focus on the next tier of Tampa prospects.

Flyers get a point and so did Colorado. Lots of three point games.

Hopefully LA keeps rolling. All of a sudden Martinez and Carter may be off the market

Blues get at least a point taking TB to OT

Hoping for OT between Chicago and Vancouver, Edmonton win, Arizona win, Detroit win and Dallas win. Dallas just tied their game.

They're making the playoffs. I hate them, but they're making the playoffs. They're suddenly 5 points out of the last spot.

Honestly that doesn’t bother me. The less teams that are sellers and potential buys the better. Perhaps these teams on the cusp would be more interested in guys like Namestnikov or Fast who have term left as rental additions. That way if they don’t make the cut their purchase isn’t all for naught.

Hawks beat Canucks in OT, West is mediocrity madness right now. Might be great for Rangers selling odds as well as lottery odds.

St Louis with the win in OT. That’s a good thing for the Rangers
St Louis is better than us and will pass us along with teams like Philly and Chicago. The Devils worry me big time and even LA a bit.No way in hell Detroit and Ottawa pass us.

Great job tonight BTW calling for 3 point games.

Absolutely Hopefully those mediocre west teams like The AVS, Coyotes, Kings, Oilers and Canucks become buyers or at very least not sellers because they think they have a shot at the playoffs.

If Detroit keeps all their shit and the Rangers sell off there’s a slight chance we fall behind them

Very longshot though

It could be close but but don't see them being good enough to put together any kind of a streak.
And the Yotes down 2 now ugh

Carolina is 12-5-1 in their last 18 games. They can never beat the Rangers at MSG. Watch them get run over again tonight. Carolina has lost 16 straight games at MSG. The Hurricanes last win at MSG was October 29,2010.

Rumor on main boards about Breadman to Preds. WOW..Tolvanen Filia Fabbro 1st all may be in play. If I am Gorts play Winnipeg against Preds. Hayes and Zuke on Preds is exactly what they need.

WOW....Wilson fed Cole like a hungry jackhammer . Where are the AV teammates ? That should not happen on a tight team dirty hit or not...you don't let a bud take that kind of beating ...somebody should have jumped in ...you just have to . Looks bad for Av's . Team not that cohesive...reminds me of a lot of Ranger teams over the years . Bad memories....flashbacks....

I don't think the Boyle deal has a thing to do with the value we might get back for Zucc. Boyle fits a particular need for certain kinds of playoff bound teams. Teams look for size and grit going into the playoffs--he's had extensive playoff experience---but beyond that penalty killing, face-offs and he usually finds a way to contribute something offensively. He's also a very good team guy.

Zucc has some of those qualities--the experience, good team guy, can help out on the pk--but he definitely doesn't have others. Zucc will be expected to fit in in a top 6 role and expected to contribute accordingly and there's more of a question to whether he'll meat those expectations IMO than the expectations for Boyle in a 3rd line role.
