Thats a terrible return for Erik Karlsson. Would argue the Nash deal to Boston was a better return and that was pure rental. At least SJ will get a full season, and who knows from there.


It's a lot of pieces...that's about it. If your trading the best d-man in the NHL you better get a high end talent in return.

Erik Karlsson returned a 1st (2020), 2nd (2019), Dylan DeMelo, Chris Tierney, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers and 2 conditional picks

To me, the McDonagh return is better despite being less valuable than Karlsson. Sorry but adding two 25-year old depth players in Dylan DeMelo and Chris Tierney doesn't tip the value for me. Those 2 are players you can pick up in free agency each year.



*For comparison-sake I am removing Miller and Namestnikov as if it's a one-for-one trade even though I don't think it was

it’s pretty awful. It doesn’t matter that it’s only 1 year, EK is worth more than that. They gave up a 1C and likely a top 4 draft pick for 2 years of Duchene and then get a 2020 1st and spare parts for Karlsson? Holy hell

I remeber people made fun of Sakic for waiting so long to deal Duchene. Not anymore
